About Darryl
With two MAs, six years of teaching beginner and intermediate Spanish courses to undergrads, and more than four years spent living in Spain, I have nurtured my passion for Hispanic culture and trained rigorously to share it effectively with others.
While abroad, I spent one year studying before returning for an even longer duration to teach English. I first taught in a high school. Several months later I began one-on-one lessons and my list of clientele was growing rapidly. So, I transitioned to only giving private lessons to a commercial pilot, a lawyer, a prominent politician, an architectural firm, teachers, and business executives in finance, real estate, and tourism. For three years, I crisscrossed the cities of Madrid and Palma de Mallorca learning first-hand of the challenges that accompany acquiring another language and contemplating how I could help.
After returning to the US, I began grad school where I obtained two MAs in Spanish and Hispanic Studies while pursuing a doctorate that ended due to the injuries I sustained in a car accident.

I offer engaging classes centered on student/client objectives (e.g. tutoring, improving conversation).
My ability to uniquely deconstruct complex or confusing grammar before re-presenting the material in steps as opposed to countless repetitive exercises has helped many people acquire knowledge with confidence.
Combined with a wealth of cultural knowledge, I am able to draw connections that make the target language relatable. Thereby stimulating conversation and guiding people towards improving their listening and oral communication skills.
Rather than talk about imaginary routines or describe people in a book, let’s chat about topics tailored to your interests and the present-day. This real-world application makes the language more dynamic and is quite the confidence booster when you realize you are expressing yourself well enough to hold an authentic conversation. From there, it depends on improving fluency, accuracy, etc.
To improve verbal skills, I incorporate active listening to focus on two primary areas: identifying problematic grammatical structures that impede communication and assessing how accurately one conveys their thoughts. Conversations are naturally fluid not rigid constructs with no autonomy. To emphasize that idea, I often encourage clients to attempt to describe objects they cannot identify in the target language instead of switching languages. This exercise utilizes what you already know as a foundation for a new idea which, consequently, expands your knowledge.
