About John

An enthusiastic and experienced teacher and researcher in French and Literature (Comparative, as well as English Lit, French Lit, and literary theory), I am a final year PhD candidate in Comparative Literature, currently working as a Lecturer (ATER) at the Sorbonne Nouvelle University in Paris. I offer online tutoring to fit around your schedule.

After completing an undergraduate MA from Edinburgh in English Literature and French (First Class with Distinction) and an MA in Comparative Literature from UCL (Distinction), I have been based in France for ten years, where I am completing my PhD (at Paris 8 University); I am fully bilingual and have a dual culture.

About the lesson

My tutoring services will be adapted to meet your needs and curriculum, whether a couple of classes to brush up on a book (in French or English), theoretical idea, or element of French language or culture (from translation to history to use of idioms…), or ongoing support throughout the academic year (and beyond). In our first (free) session, you can outline your needs and I can discuss how I can tailor my services to you.

With a broad knowledge of the French and English languages, and of literature in French and English, as well as the principles of comparative literature and literary theory, I am competent and comfortable tutoring across these areas and carrying out any necessary research and reading. It is a real pleasure for me to work with students to help them achieve their best and to share my love of literature, and of the language and cultures of France, the country that has become my second home.
I am happy to use a range of supports (Zoom, Skype, Teams, Meet…) to tutor online and can send you resources during lessons and to help prepare.

My knowledge and understanding of both the British and French university systems (as well as experience of the US system, having completed the first year of my PhD at the University of Southern California) allows me to tailor my skills to suit your needs and specific context. I have taught both as a university lecturer (classes and seminars) and as a private tutor of Literature, French and English, including exam prep, across a wide range of specific subjects and courses.

My PhD is entitled ‘Life Lyrics by post-immigration English and French writers since 1980: compared poetics’ (La lyrique de vie des minorités post-immigration anglaises et françaises : poétiques comparées) and my specialisms include:
contemporary literature (UK/France);
postcolonial theory and writing;
poetry;
literature and music (including rap);
the English and French literary canons;
modern and contemporary French society and culture;
the history of colonialism and immigration in the UK and France and in British and French literature;
nature writing;
lyricism;
compared stylistics (both studying and writing in different registers, evolving literary styles);
translation, and more.
