About Freya

I have been running a private music studio for ten years, teaching viola, violin, music theory, improvisation, and music composition. I am working on a Doctorate in Viola Performance at Boston University. I hold a Master's in Viola Performance from Baylor University and a Bachelor's in French and Viola Performance from the University of Oklahoma. I maintain an active performance schedule, playing recitals and concerts in Boston, MA, and around the country. I have performed at major concert halls like Carnegie Hall in New York City, the Alex Theatre, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. My favorite parts about teaching are helping a student achieve a goal, inspiring joy in others, and teaching students how to play music with ease. When I'm not teaching or performing, I spend my free time with my dog outside, reading, painting, or watching vintage movies.

About the lesson

I prioritize ensuring I can help each student set and reach their goals. I value a teaching approach that allows students to dictate the pace at which they move and the style of music they want to work on. Music lessons not only prepare and teach students about creativity and playing an instrument but also about life. For example, practicing an instrument teaches students how to study for classes or a new skill, or telling a story with music teaches empathy and creativity.

As an educator, I am committed to providing students with a highly personalized experience. I am dedicated to helping them achieve their goals, navigate performance anxiety, and master effective practice techniques.

Here is a sample outline of how a lesson with me would look like:
We would start by catching up and telling me how the week went, and then I would ask, "What was your favorite part about your practice this week?" Then, we would do some warmups to warm up the brain, instrument, and body, followed by working on a challenging spot from the student's music that week before getting further into the music. At the end of the lesson, we recap and write the significant learning points from that day into the lesson journal before setting goals for the next week.
