About Joyce

Hailing from Hong Kong, I began my violin journey at the age of five. Supported by multiple scholarships, I graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with a Bachelor of Music degree. I then ventured to London, where I achieved my Master's degree with Merit at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Having 8 years of teaching experience, I have been teaching privately and in music schools, with students from the age of 3 to 18, from beginners to advanced/diploma levels. I also welcome adult learners. My lessons are mostly 1:1 but I also teach in group settings, with experience teaching in primary schools and running music workshops. As an active performer, I have a passion for orchestral and chamber music. I have led and toured with youth orchestras. I have worked with acclaimed ensembles such as the Shanghai String Quartet, Orion String Quartet, Endellion String Quartet, and Calidore String Quartet. During my studies, I served as the associate concertmaster of the HKAPA Symphony Orchestra. I also had the privilege of participating in side-by-side workshops with the Hong Kong Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra. My commitment to musical exploration has taken me to music festivals in the U.K., U.S., Germany, and Taiwan. Having lived in and travelled to various cities, I firmly believe that music is a universal language that transcends cultural boundaries, bringing people from diverse backgrounds together. Post-graduation, I have been a fellow violinist for Orpheus Sinfonia in London and Nevis Ensemble in Scotland, where I developed my passion further for music in community settings. My performances have brought joy to diverse audiences in prisons, school settings, dementia centres, care homes and additional support needs centres across Scotland. With a passion to share my music knowledge with others, I currently serve as a joint Instrumental and Creative Learning Ambassador for Benedetti Foundation and a support musician for Big Noise Sistema Scotland.

About the lesson

I believe music education is for everyone, anyone from any background can start at any age. I tailor your lessons to whatever your interests are, and to your learning style and needs. Every lesson with me should be a fun and enjoyable time. I am very keen to develop my students' interest in music and the instruments, as well as self-motivation. I put a strong focus on basic techniques and playing posture, as well as practice techniques and performance psychology. I wish my students to have the ability to play the instrument however they want to ultimately, so regular practice at home is very much encouraged, and I will always be exploring practice methods with you, because everyone is different! I will also teach theory and musicianship in my lessons, so you gain a better understanding of what you are learning, and be a well-rounded musician. I often set clear goals with my students, and prepare them for ABRSM exams, competitions, auditions, concert performances. All my lessons can be taught in English, Cantonese and Mandarin. Depending on your ability, lessons will range from 45 mins to 1 hour. For younger learners or special requests, I will also offer 30 mins lessons.
