About Clara

Hello! I am a violin teacher with over 4 years of experience and more than 200 students taught. Violin is the instrument I have lived with since childhood, and the depth of my relationship with it — technical, musical, and emotional — is something that comes through in every lesson I deliver. I teach because I want to share the extraordinary experience of making music on this instrument with as many people as possible, at every level of ability and every stage of musical development. I work with students from age 5 through to adult learners, and from absolute beginners through to advanced performers preparing for conservatoire. I am experienced with ABRSM and Trinity violin examination preparation at all grades, and with the specific challenges of preparing for music college auditions, orchestral auditions, and competitive performance contexts. I also teach students who are simply developing their violin playing for personal satisfaction, perhaps for an amateur orchestra, for chamber music with friends, or simply for the joy of playing beautifully at home. I am patient, enthusiastic, and genuinely invested in every student's progress. I take real pride in the results my students achieve, and even more pride in the musical experiences they have along the way — the pieces that become genuinely moving to play, the moments of technical breakthrough, and the growing ability to communicate real emotion through the instrument.

About the lesson

The violin demands a very particular kind of patience from both the student and the teacher, because the early stages of learning can be sonically challenging — the instrument does not produce beautiful sounds automatically, and developing the technique to produce a genuinely pleasing tone takes time and careful work. I prepare every new student honestly for this reality while making those early stages as rewarding and musically meaningful as possible, so that the motivation to persist through the technically demanding early period is genuinely felt and not just promised. My technical approach prioritizes tone quality as the primary aesthetic goal from the beginning. A beautiful tone on the violin comes from the bow — from the right combination of bow speed, bow weight, and contact point for any given dynamic and character — and I spend substantial time developing students' bow technique and their ear for the relationship between bow use and sound quality. Left-hand work, intonation, and fingerboard geography are developed alongside this, with scales and technical exercises used in parallel with repertoire throughout. I prepare students for ABRSM and Trinity grade examinations at all levels, covering all components of the assessment thoroughly, including the often neglected elements of scales and arpeggios, sight reading, and aural tests. I also teach students who are not working toward any formal assessment but who want to develop as orchestral players, as chamber musicians, or simply as lovers of violin music who want to play as beautifully as they can for their own satisfaction.
