About Silvia

I am a Lecturer in Engineering at The Open University. I have a Masters degree in Physics and a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering.

I am an Associate Fellow at the Higher Education Academy. Within the Higher Education Academy qualification, I demonstrated my teaching skills in terms of curriculum development, planning learning activities and teaching delivery. I have been a tutor in Maths and Physics in 1-to-1 sessions and for groups of students. I taught to high school, university and adult learners. The university students belonged to different degrees (Materials Science, Economy, Engineering, Pharmacy and Psychology).

About the lesson

My excellent academic career demonstrates I developed very strong and effective learning methods. I am willing to share my strategy with my students and to adapt it to their learning style.

My tutoring methodology is very pragmatic: I help the tutees to learn how to solve the problems they face and to fill their knowledge gaps in order to reach their objectives. I like to base my support on the learning materials they are already using in order to stick with their syllabus and be sure the learning activities I propose are aligned with their assessment. I help the students to become independent problem solvers by learning to solve the exercises in their exam papers. In case of university level, I like to know in advance from the students what they want to cover to ensure I will be prepared.
