About Sebastian
Hello! My name is Sebastian Torrey, an expert-level chess player (2000 ELO) with a degree in Elementary Education. I have 3 years of experience working with students aged 4-12, including students with diverse needs. My goal is to share my passion for the game of chess with both adults and kids, while helping them reach their full potential. My favorite aspect of chess is how positions can be sometimes logical and mathematical, but other times wacky and unpredictable. Learning to navigate both types of positions is how I make my lessons interesting.

Chess, much like science, is learned through discovery. My teachings center around the student making observations, experimenting, and learning at their own pace. I use a free and safe website, Lichess, which students can move pieces on in real time, and use to save positions to study for homework. I also teach my students how to use chess.com, the other major chess website. My lessons are geared to brand new players (how the pieces move, how to set up the board, etc.), to beginner players (board vision, opening principles, basic tactics, etc.), to intermediate players (opening theory, common tactics, positional motifs, and endgames).
I tutor over Zoom or in person (Manhattan).
