About Shay

Hello! I’m Shay, an experienced academic and test prep tutor passionate about helping students reach their full potential. I specialize in preparing students for the SSAT, SAT, ACT, and other standardized tests, as well as strengthening core reading, writing, and math skills. About the lesson

My test prep approach is personalized, strategy-based, and results-driven. Every student learns differently, so I start by identifying strengths, weaknesses, and test-taking habits through an initial diagnostic assessment. From there, I design a customized plan focusing on:

Concept Mastery: Strengthening core reading, math, and verbal reasoning skills.

Test-Taking Strategy: Teaching timing, pacing, and elimination techniques to reduce errors.

Confidence Building: Using guided practice, feedback, and positive reinforcement to reduce test anxiety.

Real Practice: Incorporating official-style questions, timed drills, and full-length practice tests.

My lessons emphasize understanding why answers are correct, not just memorizing patterns—so students develop lasting critical-thinking skills that extend beyond the exam.

Lesson Plan Example

Session Length: 60 minutes (in-person or via Zoom)
Typical Structure:

Warm-Up (5–10 min): Quick review of previous material or timed mini-quiz.

Skill Focus (20–25 min): Targeted instruction on one area (e.g., vocabulary strategy, reading inference, algebraic reasoning).

Guided Practice (20 min): Students work through test-style problems with step-by-step coaching.

Review & Reflection (10–15 min): Discuss mistakes, note patterns, and assign customized homework for mastery.

Every few weeks, students take a mock test to track progress and adjust focus areas. This ensures consistent improvement in both accuracy and pacing.
