About Matthew
I am a friendly and enthusiastic teacher with over twenty years' experience. I have spent a lot of time working with all sorts of students, aged from under 6 to over 50. These have included children and adult beginners, students with playing problems, post grade 8 students looking for new challenges as well as older people who are looking for help learning music. I love inspiring people to get involved with music-making and I have spent most of my life thinking about how best to help people learn and improve. If you are hoping to start playing a brass instrument or are looking for a new teacher then I'd love to hear from you. Most of my students are trumpet or cornet players, but I also teach orchestral and band conducting. I am happy to help students prepare for jazz or classical grades if they wish but it's fine if they'd rather not. Many of my students have achieved distinctions in their exams and all my students gain at least a pass. As well as working privately, in the past I have worked as a brass tutor for Bromley Youth Music Trust and London Borough of Newham. As well as trumpet playing, I completed a master's degree in orchestral conducting at the Royal College of Music, and much of my work involves directing community orchestras, bands, and choirs. I think it is important that the instrument is a way into learning all kinds of interesting things about music so I try to cover a broad range of different ideas in lessons. I don't just stick to 'classical' music; I think it's great to explore lots of different things from the very beginning. Lessons can incorporate improvisation, playing by ear, and music theory as well as playing technique. Lessons are tailored to the individual student's needs and interests. I teach on Saturdays at my house in north London, or online. In some circumstances I am able to arrange lessons on other days. As a performer I have played and directed a lot of different music in all sorts of groups including: orchestra, brass band, wind band, big band, small jazz groups, big and small brass groups, street bands and pop bands. I'm also an experienced soloist and I have given many recital and concerto performances. I have experienced and overcome a lot of problems in my own playing, and am keen to help others resolve problems that they experience. Alongside teaching and performing I also have a lot of experience working in schools, leading ensembles, delivering workshops, and teaching groups of children. I have a clear DBS certificate from 2019 and I have completed safeguarding training at basic and organisational lead levels. I have been involved in music-making and playing the trumpet for 30 years and it has been brilliant fun. Whether you just want to play a bit in your spare time or take it more seriously, I can show you how to get the most out of it and have the best experience!

My lessons are usually 30 or 60 minutes and are for anyone of any age or level. They are structured as follows: 1. Catch up, discussion of recent practice, rehearsals, and performances. 2. Basic warm-up. I always start lessons off with some simple work on improving breathing and sound quality. Getting this aspect of playing to work well is the foundation and most other things flow naturally from it. This is excellent work to do with all students, regardless of age or level. I would ordinarily spend ten minutes of a 1-hour lesson on this work. 3. Technical work. This section of the lesson varies quite considerably depending on the student's age, level, and objectives. The more serious and ambitious the student, the more important this is. It can include scales, drills, and exercises, all of which are selected based on the challenges of the music the student is currently learning. This section would normally be only about five minutes of a 1-hour lesson, with the student given clear instructions on how to practise each exercise between lessons. 4. Music. This is the most important part of the lesson. We play musical instruments in order to play music, so it’s really important that we spend the majority of our time doing so! Playing music is the best route to improving our instrumental playing and for most people is more fun than technical work. I usually recommend specific pieces that will help each individual’s development in different areas. Learning a piece of music covers a lot of interesting things beyond the basic technical aspects of playing: what the piece is about, when and where it was written and by whom, and how to go about performing it effectively. This section is about forty minutes of a 1-hour lesson. 5. Recap. At the end of each lesson I go over the key points that have been discussed, and I give clear instructions of what should be practised in the upcoming week. I studied classical and jazz trumpet playing at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and was also fortunate to study with Kristian Steenstrup, professor at the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus, Denmark. Many of his ideas, which are derived from those of the great American brass pedagogue Arnold Jacobs, are employed in my work.

Matt has taught trombone to my twelve year old daughter and is currently teaching my seven year old son trumpet. Both of the children feel confident with Matt as he works through the technical and musical aspects of their instrument in a way that is accessible and allows them to feel in control. They always look forward to their lessons and feel proud of their achievements. My daughter has gone to boarding school and has really missed Matt's approach to teaching.
I asked my 8 year old, who is learning the trumpet with Matt if he would recommend him to his friends. My son immediately answered 'Yes!' 'Why?' I asked, 'Because he is patient and explains really clearly'.
Matt is a fantastic tutor, he has been teaching my younger son piano and my two older sons trumpet in the past year. He is a very accomplished musician and patient teacher and they look forward to their weekly lessons with him. He explains things concisely, recommends resources to aid their learning, and makes lessons fun. He has guided two of my sons through grades 1-3 trumpet. Matt is always very punctual, but also flexible if I need to rearrange a lesson. I can recommend Matt as very professional tutor.
Matt is an excellent trumpet teacher. He has guided our son from grade 2-4 in a year and has done so in a stimulating way. He focuses on good technique with exciting and varied repertoire. Several times he's contacted us between lessons to advise of useful resources for our son's development. He is friendly and approachable and takes a genuine interest in his students' development. Before the grade 4 Matt provided excellent support and encouragement. I recommend Matt to any prospective trumpet student.
Matt has been teaching J for 6 months and he's come on hugely in this time. Matt is firm and clear about what J needs to concentrate on while playing in order to improve. He sets realistic targets each week and explains what J needs to do to get there. He is also very clear in communicating with us about what is realistic, he's happy to be contacted by text or email during the week. J says he really enjoys lessons with Matt because he is really good at explaining how to do what he's asking him to do.
Matt is not only a good musician, he's a great teacher too. He's able to communicate with children and get the very best out of them. My 8 year old daughter started lessons last September and has just gained distinction for her Grade 1. He also gives advice and guidance to us, as parents, so that we can support Lulu with her practice, and encourage her playing. He inspires Lulu and as a result she loves playing the trumpet.
I'm an Architect and have no musical experience whatsoever, I've been learning the trumpet for 1½ years, having lessons with Matt once a week. Matt is a great teacher and has a balanced approach to teaching mixing theory, practice and musicianship along with high standards and lots and lots of patience. I've been amazed by what I've achieved in a short space of time and get such a lot out of it. I would encourage anyone thinking of taking up an instrument no matter what age you are.
I am a singer songwriter and PGCE music student and have been taking lessons with Matt for a couple of months now, with the aim of learning the trumpet but even more importantly to improve my general musicianship. Matt has from the beginning tailored the lessons in response to my personal needs, making them very effective and enjoyable.
Matt has been teaching me to play the piano since the past three months. It is an absolute pleasure learning from him. He beautifully explains the fundamentals of music and tries different techniques to make it easy for the learner. He ensures that the learner understands and can play what is being taught flawlessly. It is great fun learning from him and I cherish the lessons and the learning experience.
I highly recommend Matt as a great trumpet teacher. My 10 year old son really enjoys lessons with him. Matt spends time and thought working out the best way to inspire and engage a rather inattentive boy. He is thorough and has high standards. Brilliant!
