About Bret

Hello! My name is Bret Paddock, a full-time professional musician based out of Studio City, CA. I have long been enamored by music of all sorts, ever since I was introduced to piano at 5 years old. My passion for playing piano & exploring various types of music over the years soon turned into my passion for sharing it with others, through teaching - which brings me here today!

At this point in my life, I have garnered:
- 25 years of experience playing, performing, & studying the piano.
- Decades worth of formal musical education & classical training accumulated from various private teachers, Guild & Certificate of Merit programs, The Colburn Music School, and a Music degree from UCLA.
- 12+ years of professional experience working full-time in the music industry as: a gigging pianist/keyboardist, a versatile multi-instrumentalist on guitar + classical upright bass, a private music teacher, and a full-service music producer & songwriter for others - having collaborated with various independent & multi-platinum selling artists within the popular music circuit. Some musical credits include: Jaymes Young, Kesha, Ryan Nealon, JHart, Andie Case, Lindsey Stirling, Leroy Sanchez, Lola Lennox, Wayne Kramer, Tom Morello, David Archuleta, Sam Tsui, Madilyn Bailey, Diamond White, Kurt Schneider, India Carney, Monstercat Records, & many more.

My diverse skills and background allow me to bring a very blended, versatile expertise to my private piano lessons. To reiterate my "About My Lessons" segment above, I bring a mix of strong, formal classical training, technique, theory & sheet-music reading to the table, along with jazz/gospel improvisational skills, ear-training, and pop-oriented methodology - which I apply only as each student's level or musical goals see fit!

About the lesson

As an educator, my personal piano teaching philosophy has always been catered to each student’s unique individuality, interests and specific musical goals. I always prioritize meeting each student where they're currently at, hearing about what excites them musically, getting to know them as a person, and finally, where they dream of ending up as a result of taking piano lessons - with an aim to always keep things open, fun & enjoyable. From there, I provide them the situationally-appropriate formal knowledge, necessary steps of practice, and customized lesson planning for them to conquer each unique musical goal they've always wished to achieve!

With my versatile array of professional musical experience and expertise (in bio below), I am able to bring formal classical training, technique, theory & staff-reading to the table, mixed along with jazz/gospel improvisational skills, ear-training, and even more casual, pop-oriented methodology -- all applied as each student's level or musical aspirations see fit. While I may pull from various creative roads of understanding to help a student learn a song they like, or reach a musical end goal, I do definitely value the importance of fundamentals (scales, chords, arpeggios, and the circle of fifths) to help get you there with a full-scope, gapless understanding -- regardless of song or genre!

Every lesson with me will be:
- customized to you as an individual -- whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced player (of any age 5+!)
- consist of engaging conversation to get to know you, the musical things you enjoy, & the areas you feel stuck or would like to improve
- consist of me then pulling from my bag of expertise to custom-tailor a plan for YOU to reach your individual goals as a new & improved pianist & musician!
