About Alyssa

Alyssa Nicole Samson is an accomplished Vancouver-based Filipino-Canadian mezzo-soprano passionate about performing contemporary/new music. Notably, she is driven by her belief that classical music can make an impact that transcends beyond traditional performance settings. This is evidenced by her breadth of experience leveraging music to educate people about their heritage, share contemporary stories about pivotal societal issues, and build community between musicians and non-musicians alike. This passion for unity has brought her opportunities to perform internationally in Portugal, Italy, Spain, Austria, and the United States, in addition to working with musical communities across Canada.

On the operatic stage, Alyssa is committed to bringing a fiery stage presence to every role she brings to life. Recent highlights for the 2022-2023 season include La Baronessa di Champigny in Il Cappello di Paglia di Firenze (UBC Opera), Female Friend/Ensemble in Dragon’s Tale (Tapestry Opera & Soundstreams), and Mrs. XE in Angel’s Bone (Re:Naissance Opera). This coming 2023-2024 season, she will reprise the role of Mrs. XE with Loose Tea Music Theatre in March 2024 in Toronto.

In addition to her time on the operatic stage, Alyssa’s current focus is on exploring themes of identity in her own life using Filipino Kundiman as a platform to develop the meaning of being a second-generation Filipino-Canadian artist. Alyssa is also the assistant artistic director of Wings Vocal Collective (WVC), a semi-professional ensemble comprised of singers in a wide variety of careers who come together to celebrate music. With WVC, they have performed and collaborated with a variety of organizations in the Lower Mainland including the VGH UBC Hospital Foundation, and have competed in the International Competition of A Cappella Open.

When Alyssa is not performing, she is also a music educator. As a voice teacher, her philosophy stems from the belief that no two voices are the same and every voice is equipped with their own unique toolbox.

Alyssa holds a Master of Music in Opera Performance from the University of British Columbia under the tutelage of mezzo-soprano Krisztina Szabo with whom she currently studies with.

As an educator, I believe all persons have the potential to be singers. We are all equipped with a unique set of tools that make our voices different from each other. My job as a teacher is to listen and help you access your highest potential in order to reach your musical goals.

I began singing as soon as I could speak and have always enjoyed singing classic hits by Whitney Houston and Celine Dion. With a formal background in operatic singing, I use classical techniques as a foundation for all genres of singing. My areas of expertise are in classical voice and pop.

As an artist, I am committed to creating and fostering a space that is safe and inviting for those of all races, genders, sexual identities, and ages.
