About Nellie

Hello, nice of you to visit my profile! But first things first: If you’re looking for a traditional teacher to walk you through the basics with a textbook, I must say upfront that I am not the teacher for you. BUT if you’re someone learning Finnish out of linguistic curiosity, appreciate in-depth exploration of grammar, morphology, and phonetics, and would love to get high-quality example sentences and translations with notes on grammar and nuance, I’m definitely the teacher you’ve been looking for.

As a language learner myself, I have studied Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Hindi, and Marathi in my free time, and German, Russian, and Swedish in school, over the past 10 years, with a focus on etymological links through historical forms (esp. Middle Chinese and Sanskrit roots), phonetics, and script. I also do computational linguistics as a hobby, mostly in the form of lower-level NLP (normalisation of different scripts and spelling variation) and corpus analysis, with a little bit of dabbling into pos tagging and dependency parsing. Besides my language projects taking up most of my time, my side hustle is being a university student of mathematics and theoretical computer science.

About the lesson

The biggest problems I’ve come across in language learning have been the lack of 𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙖𝙡 language resources and any proper break down of nuance. Textbook language is not really used anywhere outside that context, colloquial grammar patterns and vocabulary get little to no attention in language learning and linguistics, and too many phrase lists (and even books!) these days are just AI-generated garbage. So learning how a language is actually used is extremely difficult without a native speaker’s help. That’s where I come in. To answer the question: “How do you say this? No, I mean, 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮. And why?”.

I’d be happy to translate phrases, explain grammar, idioms, and vocabulary, and generate example sentences based on a topic of your choosing (for example “how to express opinions”), with in-depth explanations of the structures and vocabulary used. I would thus characterise myself primarily as a descriptive linguist with my approach.

I’m also very familiar with IPA and phonetics if you’d like to learn about or improve your own pronunciation from a more detailed and theoretical perspective, or would want any sentences phonetically transcribed. I’d be happy to provide audio too to help you distinguish the sounds or for shadowing!

- Overview of the grammar with a focus on recognising patterns, not reproducing them
- Advanced phonology (sandhi; optional)
- Examples of real language usage (learning complete sentence patterns and recognising their grammatical features)
