About Vanesa

I offer Psychology tutoring online or in-person within the Brighton & Hove area (in an agreed public location) or remotely. Being in the middle of more permanent job-searching, I am currently extremely flexible.

Currently, I am a First-Class BSc Psychology graduate awaiting my formal certificate. I began studying psychology formally at A-Level, but my fascination with the human mind and behaviour started long before that! I have been seeking out learning opportunities independent of my education, and continue to do so now.

I have also completed a study exchange at Bond University, where I received a Vice Chancellor’s Award for Academic Excellence and a certificate of highest-in-class in The Influence of Biology on Human Behaviour. Exposure to highly diverse, personalised teaching styles during this time had a profound impact on my learning journey. This experience exposed me to diverse and highly personalised teaching approaches which were transformative to my learning, and it’s a style I hope to channel into my own tutoring.

What ultimately brought me to tutoring is personal experience. Throughout my academic years, I’ve received academic skills tutoring and mentorship. Personal insight, the content of my education, 1:1 support, and exposure to diverse teaching styles during my study exchange, have all contributed to my understanding of psychological concepts, theories, and methodologies, and my ability to apply relevant principles to tutoring others.

Having previously struggled with certain subjects such as research methods/statistics (which I was able to bring up), I understand the need for patience and flexibility in teaching, and look forward to supporting students in this.

I’m passionate about supporting a diverse range of students, inclusive of neurodiversity, and can tailor my approach accordingly. My previous work experience includes roles as a psychiatric healthcare facilitator within the NHS, and as a carer for adults with severe and complex learning disabilities. As part of those roles I completed diversity and inclusion training. My chosen degree modules also heavily informed me on neurodiversity, and I have recently independently completed an ACAMH CPD certificate on ADHD in females. This informs the way I communicate, plan sessions and support student needs.

I’m deeply committed to continuous personal and professional development and am welcoming of honest, constructive feedback. I love to hear new ideas and implement methods to better support my students!

In terms of previous qualifications, I hold 10 GCSEs and completed A-Levels in Psychology (A), Sociology (A), and Art & Design (C). I am also refreshing my knowledge of the GCSE and A-Level Psychology curriculum, so I can confidently support younger students alongside early undergraduates.

My goal is to help guide students into making achievable steps towards progression, help build confidence, and to develop effective study habits that go beyond exams! :)

My teaching style is very open, welcoming to any questions, and I am able to adapt my approach depending on the needs of each student. I understand what it's like to need a topic explained from different angles and will happily do so until you are confident.

For effectively covering material, I try to focus on finding meaning in the material. This may look like applying real-world relevant examples to you, and finding meaning in your learning experience. I provide options for strategies based on individual motivation levels and learning preferences (e.g., visual, verbal, interpersonal, reading/writing), to make memorising material a smoother and less time-consuming process.

In organising sessions, I aim to combine structure with flexibility, allowing for students to take the lead in goal-setting as I provide support on structuring (e.g., SMART goal-setting framework), explaining, and revising complex material.

I encourage students to provide previous feedback from past exams or tests to identify areas of strength and weakness, which I use to structure a guide on which topics need to be simply rehearsed, and which need to be learnt, while also providing guidance on prioritisation. Where appropriate, I am also able to offer mid-week check-ins with students who may benefit from a task reminder, whether this may be for school homework or tasks I may assign to reinforce progress between sessions.

I offer:
• Proofreading/essay writing support (including grammar, structure, literacy, and APA 7th referencing)
• Help with navigating research methods, statistics and using SPSS (I’ve been there!)
• GCSE, A-Level and Undergraduate support - homework, assignments, exam preparation/revision (e.g., active recall, discussion)
• Explanation, elaboration and discussion of complex psychological theories, concepts, and methods (whether intra- or extra-curricular topic material)
• Support finding relevant resources and softwares to further enhance learning
• Where beneficial, creation or support with creation of personalised revision materials/resources
• Guidance on personal and professional development within psychology

I understand the importance of aligning sessions with the curriculum, which is why I ask to share topics you find challenging before each lesson - this lets me ensure I am able to provide appropriate advice and resources.
