About Catherine

Hi everyone,
I'm Catherine: a first class English Language and Literature graduate with a passion for language and communication. I am tutoring to continue to build experience and funds for my eventual PhD.

I am neurodiverse and I understand just how overwhelming an educational environment can be - I am a firm believer that success and its paths look different for each person and I'd love to help your child along theirs.

I spent a significant portion of my educational life trying to work, write, and study in the same way as my peers. I spent all of my time and energy working in a way that didn't suit my needs and meant that, while I achieved academic success, I was exhausted.
It wasn't until I made it to university that I realised that there were many ways of working which were more accessible to me. I finally felt like I'd aced the formula for consistently high grades (the overarching majority of my university assignments were graded at 70% (first class) or above) and, for once, this didn't mean forsaking my own well-being.

This is absolutely something I wish I'd learned earlier! As such, my tutoring focuses on tailored sessions which prioritise accessibility for your child first and foremost. I want to give them the space to get the most out of each of our sessions and to come away from them feeling confident that they're going to succeed.

About the lesson

The main aim for my sessions is ensuring that every student has their needs met, is comfortable, and feels safe to ask questions and delve deeper. I'm a firm believer that no one learns anything if they don't have space to ask "why".

I offer online sessions for students of all ages up to GCSE. While English Language and Literature GCSE tutoring is my focus, I offer shorter sessions on phonetics, spelling, and grammar also.

GCSE sessions centre around exam structure and prep, understanding mark schemes, essay writing, text analysis (both language and literature), and supporting your child in building confidence in their work.

My teaching style is friendly, but structured. I have experience facilitating seminars and 1-2-1 sessions on a range of subjects, catering to a variety of accessibility needs. My linguistic specialism is in communication differences and I structure sessions in a way which suits your child's individual learning style.

My GCSE sessions are an hour long (please ask for more detail on shorter phonetics, spelling, and grammar sessions if needed) and, as well as following a lesson plan tailored to your child's goals, these lessons hold space for questions, answers, and a chance to chat about what they're enjoying or struggling with in their studies.

Sessions are held on Zoom and an initial session will be held to chat through goals and areas for improvement. This way, we can decide what success looks like for your child and build a strategy to achieve those goals.
