About Shan

My name is Shan, and I'm an emerging multi-disciplinary artist focusing on themes around queer identity and space within my work. My practice uses the mediums of sound and performative art practice to transport the viewer, causing them to discern the geographies in which they inhabit.

I studied my undergraduate degree in a Bachelor of Photography which I completed in 20177. From here, I undertook two artist residencies overseas to expand my knowledge, practice, and worldview. After this experience, I worked in commercial photography for two years, with a primary field of portraiture. I realized that this wasn't challenging enough and decided to return to University to complete an Honours in Fine Arts. Throughout this year, I used Photography, Sound, and Performative Art Practice to develop a work that engages critical thinking. Presenting my final piece alongside an exegesis text which explains my process and research, I exhibited a multi-disciplinary work achieving a First Class in Honours, winning two awards, and receiving a residency. It was through this year of challenging myself that I was able to critically evolve as an artist, receiving critical praise for my work from both my peers and teachers.

As a tutor, I would like to inspire students to challenge themselves through practice and research. To push others to go outside the static notions of craft and delve deep into the tangible and exciting nature of artistic engagement, learning to unpack the world through means of idyllic expression.

About the lesson

Lessons will consist of creating a methodology for your practice, finding relevant research areas to support your work, and learning about contemporary art. This approach will focus on the student's requirements, understanding their needs and what they strive to achieve from the tutorials. As an artist, I have completed an Honours in Fine Art in First Class, which required perfect grades in all classes. I aim to use this year to continue expanding my practice and research, having multiple exhibitions and a plan to continue researching in a Master of Arts, starting mid-year.

An average lesson will go for around an hour, and before tutorials commence, students will have a complimentary 30-minute briefing session where students can share their work, course outline, or goals.

This lesson is for anyone who seeks support in their High School or Undergraduate education, focusing on research and writing. It will expand your perception of art and allow you to see and examine the world with critical engagement.
