About Keziah

My philosophy as a saxophone teacher is grounded in combining rigorous technique with expressive musicianship. I guide students through essential skills—breath control, embouchure strength, finger dexterity, tone development, and rhythm—so they build a dependable technical foundation. Alongside these, I help students develop phrasing, dynamics, vibrato, and articulation to communicate their musical ideas vividly. Music theory and ear training are integrated in context, linked to repertoire and improvisation to deepen understanding without overwhelming. Improvisation is emphasized from the start; I break it down into manageable components such as scale choices, melodic contour, and rhythmic variation, fostering creative freedom and self-confidence. Lessons are tailored to the student's goals and favorite styles, whether jazz, blues, pop, or classical. I leverage technology—recording, looping, and play-along apps—to encourage independent practice and creative exploration. A particularly rewarding experience was mentoring a student through a successful audition for a prestigious jazz ensemble, watching their technique and artistry flourish. I aim to create lessons where students feel empowered, challenged, and excited to grow as musicians and performers.

About the lesson

My saxophone teaching philosophy is centered on creating a supportive, inspiring environment where students can develop technical proficiency, musical understanding, and expressive freedom.

I begin with the essentials—posture, breath support, embouchure formation, finger coordination, articulation, tone control, and rhythmic precision—because these fundamentals lay the groundwork for healthy playing and technical agility. Simultaneously, I integrate creative exercises that promote improvisation, phrasing, and stylistic diversity, spanning jazz, classical, blues, and pop music.

I believe in adapting lessons to each student’s unique goals, learning style, and musical tastes to make progress both meaningful and enjoyable. Music theory and ear training are woven into our work together to enhance comprehension and build improvisational skills. Technology plays a key role in my approach; I use recording apps, metronomes, tuners, and backing tracks to provide constructive feedback and optimize practice effectiveness.

Performance coaching is also a priority, with opportunities to prepare for recitals, auditions, and live performances to cultivate confidence and stage presence. One unforgettable teaching moment was helping a student who struggled with breath control and tone quality develop a warm, confident sound that elevated their overall musicianship. I strive to empower my students to become not only skilled saxophonists but passionate, expressive musicians who enjoy every step of their musical journey.
