About Felipe

I have previous teaching & tutoring experience at an English-language teaching company in Chile, which I gained while I was aiming to pursue studies there. I have been both speaking English & Spanish for the majority of my life, as my Mom is from Chile and my Dad is American. Thankfully, I have had the opportunity to travel to Chile in order to see family many times in my life.

In 2020, I graduated with a Bachelor's degree from Kansas State University, and also completed an Associate's degree in 2016 from Saint Mary's College in Saint Mary's, Kansas.

I enjoy playing guitar, especially strumming and finger-picking folk-style songs from the US, or music from Spanish-speaking countries. I also very much enjoy learning etymology from Latin and Greek roots, and about how language works.

About the lesson

I led & taught small or 1:1 immersive English-only classes (“encounters”) of native Spanish speakers, with varying levels of proficiency in English, toward increasing conversational fluency at a company called Wall Street English in Santiago, Chile. The son of a native Spanish speaker, I grew up speaking Spanish and still speak Spanish regularly. I also studied Spanish formally in high school in a college-level course.

In order for students to have accurate expectations of my capabilities, I would like to be upfront that my fluency level in writing and reading is more intermediate than it is advanced and technical. However, my conversational ability is strong, and thus my strengths lie more in speaking than they do in writing.

I would employ a conversational approach in our sessions. However, I would be open to using a textbook with a student in order to familiarize him or her with writing and reading at a beginner level if the student is interested in doing so.

My approach would also include gradually exposing students to new vocabulary & phrases.

Lastly, there is the option of making the session immersive (little deviation into English conversation with few exceptions), since immersion can be a sometimes challenging but very helpful form of learning.

Students of mine could expect a personalized approach and flexible session times from me.
