About Kara

I began playing by ear and writing songs at a very young age. However, because my early musical education was quite strict and classically focused, creativity at the piano wasn’t always encouraged. That experience shaped the way I teach today.

I started teaching piano at age 15, primarily within the Royal Conservatory of Music curriculum. After studying toward my performance certificate at Mount Royal College Conservatory, I returned more fully to songwriting, writing pop music and going on to produce several albums of original work.

I currently offer online Zoom lessons as well as in-person lessons in Montreal’s Mile End district. My teaching philosophy is rooted in balance: creative exploration alongside structured curriculum. I integrate improvisation and ear training with theory and technical development. Then, as we get to know each other we may begin to specialize in one or another area.

Above all, I make lessons engaging and enjoyable, while thoughtfully challenging you to grow and to learn the music you genuinely want to learn.

About the lesson

I am deeply passionate about teaching and highly skilled at helping students of any level play the piano they’ve always dreamed of playing. I have extensive training in the classical curriculum and have spent years working as a professional musician, performing at weddings and banquets, and as a member of several indie rock bands.

This dynamic range of experience allows me to approach each lesson with both openness and structure: an open mind about who you are and what you want to achieve, followed by a clear, organized plan for what to practice between lessons in order to make steady progress.

I can teach you how to improvise and play by ear, and in the process, help you work through common challenges such as inhibition, fear, or vulnerability at the instrument. My goal is not only technical growth, but helping you feel confident and expressive at the piano.
