About Jack

I am a sophomore Three Language major at the University of Delaware focusing in French, Spanish and Russian, and my goal is to become a translator and interpreter. I started learning languages when I was in seventh grade and fell in love with them. I believe that language is one of the most important way to break barriers, build bridges and communicate with the world. My early experience learning languages comes from starting on my own before starting a traditional classroom experience, except for Russian which I started the most recently. When I learn on my own, I like making it fun and immersing myself in the language in ways that a native speaker would through music, TV shows, movies, making to-do lists, switching my phone to the target language, etc. Although I do not have a lot of experience teaching languages, I have a lot of experience teaching swim lessons and working with children of all ages, and some experience helping others in my language classes. I enjoy seeing others progress in their studies and their faces light up when they unlock new skills. One of my favorite quotes is by French singer Serge Gainsbourg. He said: "I know my limits. That's why I'm going beyond". This quote always helps me do my best even when I feel frustrated and lacking motivation.

About the lesson

My goal is to help with thinking in French and trying to limit translating between languages as much as possible. Vocabulary and using the language as much as possible, even for the smallest activities is so useful. When I make lessons, I try to incorporate what you already know, new information and activities to strengthen the language "muscle" in brain. The way I teach is based on techniques that I employed while I was learning French because I started learning French at school but started learning it on my own because I was enjoying it and wanted to go beyond what I was learning in class. These are techniques that I still employ to continue learning and going beyond my class. I can teach anyone who is interested no matter your level. I can help with learning vocabulary, reading comprehension, speaking fluency, pronunciation and writing.
