About Toby
My approach to each student is bespoke. I've supported hundreds of students through their university application journeys since 2012, and above all it's taught me that no two profiles, students, or objectives are the same. I begin by gathering information and learning more about each and every one of my students, and their situations, and from this build a detailed roadmap and plan of action for their application. Every single step is covered, and I'll help with everything from choosing a course to arranging campus tours! When I have the opportunity to teach, as a part of admissions preparation, or when I'm supporting undergraduate, master's and doctoral students in their learning, my students are often amazed by just how much they can do for themselves if they're in a learning environment that isn't adversarial, oppressive, or plain dull. My own background of experience is in science, as a bioarchaeologist, and I've worked as a civilian consultant to the NASA Ames Human Factors laboratory as a technological consultant. Central to my approach is an understanding that my students are people, with their own unique strengths, weaknesses, and abilities, which need to be nurtured and supported in order to get the best possible results. When I'm not working, my passions lie in art and computers. These two merge in my own digital art, which I've been dabbling in for some years now, and I deeply enjoy. I think it's really important for everyone, no matter what stage of their life they are at, to remember that it's not only okay, but vital for people to remain in touch with the things they love, and are passionate about, beyond their job, or their schooling. I try to ensure that all of my students are able to demonstrate this connection to their passions beyond academia in their own applications. When I was an undergraduate myself I studied BSc Archaeology, and that remains a deep passion of mine. My academic career has grown from and moved away from that in recent years, but it remains an area of study which means a great deal to me, and it's something which I try to engage with on a volunteer basis as much as possible. I bridged both social scientific and more qualitative humanities work in my MSc in the History of Science, Medicine, and Technology at Oxford. Learning to embrace both the scientific process and scientific models of learning and knowledge creation, with the nuance and artistry of humanities writing was an eye-opening experience, and it has helped me gain a perspective on the scale of change which people can feel when transitioning to A level, to university, and beyond. A perspective which is reflected in my professional, experienced, and compassionate approach to teaching. I've always felt that learning should not be daunting, or intimidating, but fun and mutual and I help my students to understand that. This brings me on to, arguably, my greatest passion which is to teach. From running outreach classes when I was 16 all the way up to the present day, I love working with people, and helping them find their own way around new concepts, and equally, learning from my students, which is part of what makes education so stimulating. During my doctorate at the University of Oxford, I was able to add to my work as a university lecturer and teacher with admissions support. I co-wrote and marked exam papers for the Oxford History Aptitude Test, reviewed UCAS personal statements from applicants, audited candidate interviews, and contributed to final decisions about which candidates would or would not make the grade. The responsibility and seriousness of this role stayed with me, and I attach similar gravity to all of my engagement with students now. I know exactly how much the admissions officers strive to make the right choice and, wherever possible, I can identify which students will be that right choice in advance, and give both sides a helping hand in reaching mutual recognition of that fact. Following my graduation, I've worked as a former admissions officer and admissions consultant for The Profs, as well as a number of other international admissions firms. In 2023, I was individually responsible for 25% of all Oxbridge offers to UK and EU based students for history within two of the firms that I represent, a number I'm immensely proud of, and expect to beat this year, with additional industry connections, statistical insights, and my own personal bank of resources which can't be found anywhere else, created during the research process for my published manuscripts on admissions testing, interviews, and university applications.

I've worked as a seminar leader and course coordinator at the University of Oxford as part of the Preparation for Learning and Teaching programme, where I've taught undergraduate and master's level history and politics students. I was also an admissions officer at the university, where I reviewed undergraduate applications for History and joint honours courses. I was course co-ordinator and principal lecturer for 2018's Theories of State module at the University of Oxford's History faculty, and I've been a frequent speaker at the Wellcome Trust. I also deliver regular historical outreach sessions and lectures as an Associate Fellow to the Royal Historical Society, and have been delivering lessons to people in schools and universities all around the world as a senior strategist with Crimson Education. Beyond this, I've also worked as a private tutor since 2009, and an admissions tutor since 2012, where I also worked in a school delivering UCAS guidance, personal statement support, and references. I've taught thousands of students, from A level to Doctoral level, in history and other humanities and social sciences subjects. I've also delivered training seminars at UK medical schools on good practice for admissions, and delivered a robust series of seminars and presentations to the staff body at NASA Ames' Human Factors laboratory in Palo Alto, California. I have supervised several undergraduate and master's students at Oxford during my time there as a Doctoral student, in history. I've also worked as a private supervisor for students at other universities (including Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, LSE, Warwick, Edinburgh, Stanford, and Duke) who have lost their own due to illness or other unforeseen circumstances. I've had the opportunity to provide this at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels for subjects including (but not limited to) History, Classics, Sociology, Geography, International Relations, Business Management, Science and Technology Studies, and Archaeology. In addition to this, I've run educational outreach programmes for Sussex Past, and the Institute of Archaeology at University College London, and I now work full time as an education and admissions consultant in the UK and the Middle East for children over 16 and adults studying humanities and social science subjects between A level and first-year doctoral level. Sessions are an hour long unless longer runtimes are specifically requested.
