About Helen
I've spent over 25 years in publishing as a senior fiction editor at Faber and Faber, Head of Zeus and Vintage Classics, and as an associate literary agent and scout for European publishers. My acquisitions include Mona Awad's novel BUNNY, which has sold over 300,000 copies.
I've taught creative writing at Faber Academy, Bath Spa University, Roehampton and the University of East London. I currently run my own editorial consultancy. I taught the Ultimate Novel Writing Course for Jericho writers for 6 years; it was a course that involved regular 1-2-1 online meetings with writers to discuss their work-in-progress over twelve months.
I can help you from both sides of the desk: how to write well, and how agents and editors will actually read your work.

Lessons are one-to-one and shaped entirely around you and your writing. Depending on where you are, we might work on:
Getting started: finding your material, building a writing habit, and learning the fundamentals of character, voice, point of view, structure and dialogue.
Developing a project: a novel, short story collection or memoir in progress, with close, honest feedback on your pages and a clear plan for revision.
Craft in depth: pacing, tension, scene-building, openings and endings, studied through your own work and through reading published writers.
Preparing to submit: polishing your opening chapters, synopsis and query letter, and understanding how agents choose what to take on.
Before each lesson you can send me pages to read, so our time together is spent on your writing rather than generalities. You'll always leave with specific, practical notes.
Who it's for:
Adults at any stage, from complete beginners to writers with a finished manuscript. I work across literary and commercial fiction, and I have a particular love of translated and European fiction. Writers working in English as a second language are very welcome.
