About David
As a former middle and high school History and Geography teacher in diverse schools in both Maryland and California, my goal is to help students become competent and confident students in social studies. On the way to achieving academic success, I hope to also inspire in students an appreciation for the disciplines of history, geography, and government.
Holding a B.A. in History from Gettysburg College, I bring a lifelong passion for historical inquiry to every session. Whether your student needs targeted support to raise classroom grades, focused preparation for AP exams, or advanced academic enrichment beyond the textbook, I offer patient, structured, and highly adaptable instruction.

My approach to Social Studies centers on making history and civics feel like a compelling narrative rather than a list of dates to memorize. As a former classroom teacher, I use a discussion-based, inquiry-driven method designed around the student's specific goals.
Whether we are tackling current coursework or diving into deeper enrichment, I guide students through primary sources, historical context, and critical thinking questions. Instead of passive lecturing, we look at why events happened, the human decisions behind them, and how those moments shape our world today. I adapt my pace and style to match each student’s unique learning style—helping them build analytical skills, essay-writing confidence, and a genuine interest in the subject.
A Typical Lesson Plan
--------------------------
Because every student’s goals are unique, sessions are tailored to either Classroom Support (mastering current school topics) or Academic Enrichment (exploring subjects beyond the standard textbook):
1) Warm-Up & Goal Setting (5–10 mins): We check in on current school assignments, review past topics through a quick discussion prompt, or introduce the day's enrichment focus.
2) Core Concept & Source Exploration (20–25 mins): We dive into the topic using interactive discussion, visual aids, or primary source excerpts (letters, speeches, maps, or historical documents).
3) Guided Practice & Application (15–20 mins): For Coursework Support: We work directly on homework, essay outlines, DBQs, or test preparation using school rubrics.
For Enrichment: We engage in deeper analytical writing, historical debate, or exploring high-interest history topics beyond the school syllabus.
4) Wrap-Up & Reflection (5 mins): We summarize key takeaways, address remaining questions, and set clear goals for upcoming school deadlines or independent exploration.
What Sets Me Apart
------------------------
Two Distinct Tracks (Support vs. Enrichment): I can seamlessly pivot between helping a student raise their grade on their school curriculum or crafting a custom, fascinating history deep-dive for a curious learner who wants an extra academic challenge.
Real Classroom Experience: Having taught in the classroom, I understand school curricula, grading rubrics, and standardized testing requirements inside and out.
Real-World Relevance: I excel at connecting historical events to modern-day contexts, helping students see the relevance of social studies in daily life.
Supportive & Low-Stress Environment: I create an encouraging space where students feel comfortable asking questions, testing out ideas, and building real confidence in their academic abilities.
Who These Lessons Are For:
--------------------------------
1) Students Needing Coursework Support: K–12 learners in US History, World History, Geography, Civics, or General Social Studies who want help keeping up with class, improving assignment grades, or preparing for exams.
2) AP & Honors Students: High schoolers preparing for AP US History, AP European History, or AP World History who need targeted help mastering document-based questions (DBQs), free-response essays, and exam prep.
3) Enrichment-Minded Learners: Curious students who want to go beyond standard school textbooks, explore high-interest historical eras, and build advanced critical thinking and writing skills at their own pace.
