About Mark

I am a full-time, professional music educator with over 45 years of teaching experience. I hold a Degree in Music Education and served as music faculty at Vanguard University for 16 years.

Over my career, I have had the privilege of instructing high-profile music professionals, including Ron Welty (the longtime drummer for the multi-platinum rock band The Offspring), whom I taught for several years.

My teaching philosophy centers on patience, encouragement, and adaptability. I love unlocking a student's creative voice and making music a rewarding, lifelong hobby.

Location: I am conveniently located right on the border of Fountain Valley (about a 1/4 mile away), making in-person lessons easily accessible for students in Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach, and surrounding areas.

About the lesson

My lessons are highly flexible and tailored entirely to your interests. I welcome students of all ages and skill levels, from young children taking their very first steps at the keys to adult hobbyists returning to the instrument.

Whether you or your child want to play pop songs, movie soundtracks, video game music, or classical pieces, I design a curriculum that keeps learning fun and stress-free. I specialize in keeping kids engaged by blending foundational note-reading with music games and creative exploration.

I understand that my students lead busy lives with school, sports, and other commitments, so I focus on a patient approach that fits naturally into your family's schedule.

Because of my deep background in music education, I don't just teach students how to read notes on a page. I love taking a deeper dive into practical music theory, improvisation, and creative arranging. If you or your child want to move past standard method books to write your own music, arrange your favorite songs, or learn how to jam freely, I have the exact pedagogical tools to guide you there step-by-step.

Ready to get started? Send me a message to book your first introductory session, and let’s get you playing your favorite songs!

My mid-teen grandson (NN) asked if he could have a "key board" as his Christmas gift. A few months after receiving the key board I asked NN if he would like to take lessons and he said "yes". I located Mr. James through a professional music teachers association and the rest is history. Mr. James is a dedicated and extremely patient teacher. NN has been Mr. James weekly student for 18 months and I attend each lesson and observe his teaching skill as well as the development of NN's music ability. I think it says a lot about a teacher's skill if a 16 year old wants to continue the lessons. My judgement of the teaching skills is partially based on the fact that I have been attending music lessons (cello with various teachers) with my now 20 year old granddaughter for 10 years.

After my son's first piano teacher moved to another state, we tried others, but he was only discouraged. We are so happy we found Mark, he has brought back my son's desire to learn.
