About Shirley
Hi! I’m Shirley, a Mandarin tutor and a final-year student at Wintec in New Zealand. Before coming here, I studied medicine in China, where I developed strong communication and teaching skills. I hold a National Level 1-B Mandarin Certificate, which means I speak at a professional broadcast standard. I’ve tutored for over 100 hours, mainly helping beginners build a solid foundation in pronunciation and everyday conversation. I’m patient, reliable, and always make sure my students feel supported and encouraged. My goal is to help you learn Mandarin with confidence and enjoy every step of the journey.

My lessons are friendly and relaxed, perfect for beginners who want to start learning Mandarin in a simple, fun way. I focus on helping students feel comfortable speaking and understanding everyday Chinese, without pressure.
We’ll start with basics like tones, pronunciation, and common daily phrases, then slowly add more vocabulary and sentence patterns. I also enjoy sharing Chinese culture, food, and customs to make lessons interesting and real.
Each class is usually around 60 minutes, but I’m flexible if you prefer shorter sessions. I’ve taught both kids and adults, mostly beginners, and sometimes those who already know a little Mandarin.
I hold a National Level 1-B Mandarin Certificate, and I’ve spent over 100 hours tutoring during my time at university. I’m patient and easygoing — my goal is to make you enjoy learning Mandarin and feel confident step by step.
