About John
I'm a certified teacher and librarian with years of experience in secondary and university classrooms, including international schools. I don't teach by lecturing. My sessions are built around active, inquiry-based learning: students do the thinking, and I ask the questions that guide them there.
Before we tackle any skill (research, note-taking, essay structure), I find out what a student already knows. New skills only stick when they connect to something real, so that's always where we start.
I also draw on executive-function coaching: the skills behind planning, time management, task initiation and staying organized. Those are usually what's actually standing between a student and a finished project, not a lack of ability.
I also plan every session backward, the way standards-based schools do. I start with what a student needs to be able to do by the end of a project, then work back to figure out what today's session should cover. It keeps every lesson purposeful, not just "getting through material."

Sessions begin with assessing strengths and identifying gaps, including how a student plans, manages time, and gets started on tasks.
From there we establish goals and create a project roadmap. Each lesson addresses the student's actual assignment through planning, research techniques, note-taking, information synthesis, essay structuring, and writing.
Students complete the work while receiving guidance and feedback. Sessions close with progress review and next-step planning.
