About Madeleine

I've always been a lover of language and started learning French at an early age. Although I grew up in the UK, I had extended family in France with whom I often went to stay, which enabled me to develop bilingual fluency. I studied English Literature at Oxford University for a year or so, before moving to the U.S., where I switched to French. I graduated (4.0 with a French major and award for the most outstanding student in the foreign language department), then taught for 17 years at Le Lycée Français de Los Angeles, (both English as a foreign language to French kids and French as a foreign language to Americans). Right now, I’m teaching French to high-school students one-on-one at a great alternative private school called Fusion Academy and collaborating with a French Canadian author in my spare time on the English translation of his first novel that was published in French. I have tutored extensively both in person and online and what I love most about teaching is helping people connect with and cultivate their intrinsic motivation, an ideal about which I'm passionate. My greatest strengths as a teacher are creativity, conscientiousness, and attunement to students’ needs and feelings. My focus is always on emphasizing strengths and progress). About the lesson

As a learner-centered teacher, my goal is always to connect with and fuel my student's intrinsic motivation. This means figuring out how you learn best, what most engages you, and tailoring my approach to fit with that. It also means supporting you with patience and encouragement every step of the way. I believe in making learning feel empowering, engaging and accessible. I also believe it can and should be meaningful and fun! And I see my role in terms of a facilitator whose task is to remove the obstacles from your path as much as possible. I cater to all levels and ages, but particularly enjoy working with high school students and adults.
