About Alex

I am an engineer who started in electronics and made the move into game development. My favorite career move so far! I am passionate about coding and game development and I worked in the UK games industry for 6+ years, on several games played by millions. I still love games and I am now focused on sharing my skills and knowledge. Oh, I almost forgot to mention. I also practiced as a therapist and teacher so I am pretty good at working with people and groups ;)

About the lesson

Hey, I'm Alex and I used to make games at King (think Candy Crush) in London. Then I taught web development in Auckland. And now I'm teaching game dev to adolescents. Making games is about so much more than just games... Game development is a craft that brings together many useful skills like; coding, design, 3D-modeling, engineering, physics, music and more. So even if you don't end up making games for a living, you will learn useful skills for your future self. And now the tools to make games are so accessible that everyone can have a go! I teach game dev to groups of adolescent students (ages 11 - 18 years) in a way that is creative, challenging and most importantly fun. Aside from that, what I'm also teaching is how to learn useful skills (that you might turn into a career one day!) Weekly lessons take up to 1.5 hours. I guide students to jump into building games ASAP so that they can see and play their games. Our lessons and your work will be based entirely on prototyping games. Students benefit from my industry experience (7+ years), learning best practices like iterative development and code quality practices. Alex was mentoring me in games development for 7 months. He started by assessing my programming ability with a few programming tasks, and quickly adapted a teaching style that suited me and my goals. He always gave thorough feedback, whilst also leading me to figure things out for myself, explaining difficult concepts in very digestible ways. He also taught me various coding practices to excel my professional skills used in the industry, such as refactoring and peer programming.
