About Drew
I am a 30-year-old father of two young boys currently working as a specialist in a local Primary School. I am curious and love learning, usually about the most impractical things but want to share this joy with others, despite any prior experiences they may have had with school or university. I'm currently going down the rabbit hole of critical thinking, reasoning, and why a lasagna is really a sandwich, as an example of my continual interest in learning. Before teaching I studied Science at Monash, focusing on Math, Immunology, and Organic Chemistry; and have always been 'sciencey' but have recently been getting more into art, writing and other creative endeavors (the quality of which is up for debate). Despite this lackadaisical descriptor of myself, I am a professional and reliable person who really wants the best for others when I can help. I have always placed professionalism at the forefront of any job I have had, and understanding time/place is the key to any working environment. I enjoy fun when I can while respecting systems that help things get done, hopefully building a relaxed and positive learning environment that still acknowledges the professional nature of tuition. From a working history point of view, out of University I got a job at an Independent all-girls school in Canterbury, initially as a CRT but then taking on an English, Humanities and International Studies role with their Year 9's, and subsequently a job as a Year 6 classroom teacher. From there I changed my life balance and have worked as a relief teacher since, including in that time spending 2 months at a Special Education school for Autism in the North and more recently about 6 months at a secondary school in the East.

My lessons typically involve a short and explicit introduction to the topic where I model the task and gauge understanding. From here I either shift focus to rectify prior misconceptions/unclear areas, or move to student-led work with constant discussion, prompting and feedback (Kind of similar to a Montessori or Inquiry approach). I am flexible with lesson length, structure and outcome as I have worked as a Casual Relief Teacher for years across Independent, Catholic, Government, and Special Education sectors. This can be basic feedback and coaching, or explicitly prior planned lessons for specific outcomes. That said, I prioritize learning for the purpose of holistic development; when an opportunity arises, I am willing to derail a planned lesson for a more natural and comprehensive learning approach. My greatest strength as an educator I feel is my confidence as a generalist, being able to teach nearly all subjects, P-12, to a high proficiency. I have noticed that being able to speak to students at an understandable level, connect ideas to other content and draw on various other skills they may have, has made learning far more approachable for my students particularly when disengagement is involved.
Addendum: In relation to English, students generally learn basic formats such as TEEL which helps to produce reasonable results across diverse learners but generally result in weaker understanding within the individual of what they're trying to achieve or how that is done. If desired I am very passionate about clarifying fundamentals and developing individual writing styles, conscious of how they relate to writing outcomes.
