About Chanel
Language is our key to understanding the world. In a day and age where literacy seems increasingly under threat, I believe teaching is my way to help those who may be struggling to access that key.
Language is also fun! I love reading, writing, and learning new languages, and nothing compares to sharing that joy with others. The word "grammar" actually comes from an old word that meant something similar to magic, and I believe there is still a spark of magic to be found and shared in the subject today.
My BA in Language Practice, English and French, my BA Honours in Linguistic Theory, English Language and Literature, as well as my TEFL Diploma in Teaching English as a Foreign Language give me a firm foundation in this subject, and I have a variety of experience working as a translator (Afrikaans, English and French), an academic and general editor, as well as having tutored online for English and Afrikaans students. I have even been a subtitle editor for some of your favourite films!
I am well-equipped for both the theoretical and practical aspects of teaching, and ready to help students meet their goals.

I am fluent in both Afrikaans and English, with some French experience. My postgraduate degree built a strong foundation for teaching by focusing on Language Acquisition, which delves into how the brain produces and processes language. Stress can actually hinder the ability to learn a language, so I aim to ensure that my teaching environment is comfortable and hope to make language learning a stress-free endeavour.
Further, I have also recently completed a 160-hour TEFL course which equipped me with the more practical tools required in teaching, from lesson structure to working with all age groups.
A typical lesson from me will take place online and focus on student goals for all age groups and proficiency levels. While the atmosphere is relaxed, lessons are carefully structured and adapted to student needs.
