About Nicholas
About Me
I have lived in Michigan all my life. Growing up outdoors, fishing, hunting for rocks and exploring every corner of the state that I could reach. That early curiosity about the physical world led me straight into geography and GIS. Photography followed naturally from all that time and it eventually turned into a career. I am a commercial drone pilot that uses imagery and mapping professionally for inspection and mapping work across the country.
The same drive to explore stays with me, my girlfriend lives in California so I split time between two states and genuinely fortunate to call both places home. Traveling back and forth has deepened my appreciation for how landscapes, terrain and land use vary from place to place. That as it turns out is what GIS is all about.
I bring out curiosity and attention to detail, into every lesson. Whether a student works through coursework a professional makes a career change or someone simply tries to master ArcGIS Pro. I approach teaching with patience real-world experience and genuine enjoyment of helping people understand not how something works but why.

My approach as a tutor
I teach GIS in the way I use GIS in my own work. Hands-on and with real examples. As a drone pilot who does aerial mapping and property inspection I use ArcGIS Pro and other Esri applications every day. This lets me bring real GIS workflows into every lesson than just textbook exercises.
Teaching method and techniques
My method has three steps. First I show the student how to do a GIS task and walk through examples. I explain why the GIS process works and what happens behind the GIS tool not which buttons to click for GIS. Second I go through the GIS steps together with the student working through the examples side by side so the student can follow the GIS logic in real time. Third I step back. Watch the student perform the GIS task on their own ensuring the student can execute the GIS workflow independently before we move on. I do not consider a GIS concept taught until the student can do the GIS task without my guiding hand.
A typical lesson
A session begins with a demonstration of the GIS skill or tool using real examples and explaining the reasoning behind each GIS step. Then the student and I work through the GIS process together step by step until the process is clear. Finally the student attempts a GIS task on their own while I watch the student and step in only if the student gets stuck.
What sets me apart
Most GIS tutors come from an academic background. I am a drone pilot who does real aerial mapping and inspection work so I can teach the full GIS pipeline from raw drone imagery to a finished GIS product not just GIS software in isolation. I am also a GIS graduate student. I understand what coursework and assignments look like from the perspective of the student, not just the instructor.
