About James

Founded in 2015 after a career in technology and management consulting, I brought analytical problem-solving and high-performance coaching into deeply personal education.

It began with my own four children—and a realization: students don't simply need someone who knows the subject. They need someone who understands how they think.

What began me tutoring my own kids and their soccer teams grew into a founder-led, team-supported practice serving learners far beyond that original circle.

I owe much of my own critical thinking to the teachers, mentors, and exemplary people who challenged and inspired me toward personal excellence: Premo, Prochaska, Schroeder, Pesola, Putman, Anderson, Fox, McCauley, Lapp, Mestek, Hart, and Kilkenny, just to name a few.

Over thousands of hours of tutoring, one lesson kept repeating: two students can struggle with the same problem for completely different reasons, and effective teaching begins by discovering the difference.

I did not begin with a teaching system and then search for students to fit it. The system emerged from years of adapting to the students sitting in front of us.

Through it all, one goal has remained constant: develop capable, confident, increasingly independent learners.

My teaching philosophy:
* “Listen first. Teach next.” We don't just teach the lesson. We teach the learner how to learn.
* Teach from where the learner is—not from where the textbook assumes they are.
* Connection-driven. Socratic. Deliberately adaptive.
* A great tutoring relationship should become increasingly unnecessary as the learner becomes increasingly capable.
* Confusion is information. A wrong answer is not simply something to correct—it is evidence of what the learner understands, assumes, or has not yet connected.
* Understanding comes before speed. Speed becomes valuable once understanding is reliable.
* The learner should do the thinking. The professor's job is to create the conditions that make better thinking possible.

Premium 1:1 GMAT and LSAT preparation already costs thousands.
The question isn't simply what preparation costs — it's how much of that investment is actually concentrated on you.

You're buying a preparation strategy — not simply tutoring hours.
Diagnostic analysis, planning, private instruction, targeted practice, progress monitoring, test review and strategic adjustments work together as one program.

Your dollars go where they can make the greatest difference.
Why spend equal time reviewing skills you've already mastered? We concentrate preparation on the gaps, habits and decisions most likely to affect your score.

A group course sets the pace for the room. We set it for you.
You shouldn't pay premium preparation prices to spend valuable study time on material selected for everyone else.

Books and apps provide material. They don't know why you missed the question.
Personal instruction identifies reasoning errors, habits and misconceptions that generic self-study can leave hidden.

Your Professor becomes more valuable as the program progresses.
The same instructor learns your reasoning patterns, pacing, recurring mistakes, strengths and the explanations that work best for you.

Your program changes when your performance changes.
The Nexus Method continually redirects preparation toward what you need next instead of continuing through a predetermined syllabus whether you need it or not.

We prepare the whole test-taker — not just individual questions.
Content, reasoning, timing, endurance, strategy and full-test execution are developed together so one weakness doesn't undermine everything else.

We prepare the whole test-taker — not just individual questions.
Content, reasoning, timing, endurance, strategy and full-test execution are developed together so one weakness doesn't undermine everything else.

Structure protects the value of your study time.
A strong plan, defined expectations and ongoing accountability help turn weeks of good intentions into consistent preparation and measurable progress.

The cheapest preparation can become the most expensive path.
Retesting, delayed applications, missed opportunities and a score below your potential can cost considerably more than preparing properly the first time.

You shouldn't spend thousands on someone else's study plan.
At The Personal Professor, your preparation is designed around your score, your goals, your weaknesses and your path forward.

Start with a complimentary consultation — no cost, no commitment.
We evaluate your goals and recommend the appropriate level of preparation before you spend a dollar.
