About Michalis
I offer one-to-one painting and drawing tuition for students at all levels, whether you’re a beginner, building a portfolio, or preparing for art school.
I hold an MFA from Goldsmiths and a degree from the Athens School of Fine Arts, with years of professional experience as both a painter and a teacher. My sessions focus on developing your technical skills and helping you understand your creative decisions more clearly.
We’ll look closely at your work together, discuss composition, structure, materials, and observation, and build practical skills you can apply independently. My teaching is about guiding you toward clarity and confidence in your work, not simply correcting it for you.
Whether you’re starting out or aiming for the next stage in your art education, I’ll help you develop a stronger, more personal approach to painting and drawing.

My lessons are built around your level, your work, and what you want to develop next.
In a typical session, we’ll look closely at your drawings or paintings, discuss what’s working, identify areas to focus on, and set practical exercises or next steps. Depending on your goals, we might cover:
• Core techniques in oil painting and drawing
• Life drawing and observation
• Composition, image construction, and developing your own themes
• Materials, surfaces, colour, tone, and mark-making
• Feedback on works in progress and suggestions for practice between sessions
• Support with portfolios, exams, and art school applications
• Art history and contemporary references to expand your visual vocabulary
Lessons are open to students aged 16 and above, from beginners to more advanced students. Each session combines hands-on guidance with thoughtful discussion, so you can build skill, confidence, and a clearer sense of direction in your work.

All of our reviews are collected by us and are 100% reliable. They correspond to real lessons experienced by the students of Michalis.
Perfect! Michalis is an excellent mentor as I am trying to further my oil painting practice. I really appreciate his philosophical approach and thoughtful analysis. Not only is he able to teach technical skills, Michalis has broadened my oil painting knowledge through critique and ideas for a practice that incorporates novel exercises, using other mediums, and experiences beyond the easel. Would highly recommend his mentorship!
- Theodore was thoughtful and engaged throughout our session. He brought his work to the session with real curiosity, asked insightful questions, and was open to discussing new ideas. It was a pleasure working with him and seeing his interest in developing his painting practice.Michalis's response :

I have only good words for Michalis. I met him in 2019 and since then we have shared comments and suggestions on our works, as well as having painted outdoors on several occasions. I can assure you that he is not only a good painter, but also a lucid and extremely knowledgeable person, a virtue he will undoubtedly share with his students. He is one of those few teachers capable of applying his ideas with practical examples without neglecting the personality of each of his students.
Gonzalo RodríguezI have known Michaelis for more than two years, as a colleague of his as an artist. I visited him many times in his studio and watched him paint and work; we had many deep conversations about art and painting, conceptually and technically, and he is one of the nicest, warmest and most patient people I've known. I can tell you he is a very skilled painter and experienced, but more than that, you would get an incredibly thoughtful, kind, and warm-hearted tutor who will teach you how to paint and go deeper in your painting. I am sure that, knowing Michaelis, you will get thorough lessons, from beginners to more experienced, from a committed tutor who is also a very knowledgeable artist. If I were to search an oil painting lessons on this website, I wish I would find Michaelis. I highly recommend it!
We both completed the same MFA Fine Art programme at Goldsmiths, and I highly recommend Michalis Karaiskos as a tutor. Apart from his painting/drawing skills (which are self-evident - just check his online portfolio), Michalis is generally passionate about art theory and history, philosophy, studies on materials and art media. I am sure that his passion and energy might be as fruitful for his students as his hard skills, and will motivate and inspire them for further development of their practice. Also, Michalis is a loving partner and farther, I watched him communicating with his little daughter, teaching her and explaining how things work, and I am confident in Michalis’s skills to convey his knowledge in a clear way to students of any age.
It is a pleasure and an honour to speak about my colleague, Michalis Karaiskos, whom I have known for several years as a tutor in various art schools for admission preparation in the Athens School of Fine Arts and as a collaborator in other art projects and workshops. I hold him in the highest regard, both as an art practitioner and as a mentor. His dedication, passion, and knowledge truly define the quality of his practice. As an inspiring figure, I am well aware of how profoundly and insightfully he has guided his students, leaving an indelible mark on their artistic journeys.
