About Skylar

I am currently pursuing my Master's in Medical Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). I also have a Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences from the University of South Carolina, where I graduated magna cum laude.

Throughout my time in college and graduate school, I have learned that everyone studies and understands information differently. Over the years, I have tried a variety of study methods and test-taking strategies to figure out what works best for me. Because of this, I understand how frustrating it can be to spend hours studying something and still struggle to fully understand it.

My goal as a tutor is to help students figure out where they are struggling and find study methods that work best for them. I enjoy breaking down complicated topics into simpler explanations and finding different ways to approach a concept until it makes sense.

I want my students to feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes because I believe that is an important part of learning. More than anything, I want to help students build confidence in their abilities and develop study habits that will continue to benefit them throughout their education.

As a graduate student pursuing my Master's in Medical Sciences, with a bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences, I understand how overwhelming challenging coursework can feel. My goal as a tutor is not only to help students understand difficult material but also to help them develop the skills and confidence to succeed independently.

My Teaching Methods and Techniques

I believe effective tutoring starts with understanding how each student learns. I begin by identifying areas where a student may be struggling, whether that's understanding a particular concept, retaining information, applying knowledge, or preparing for exams.

From there, I tailor my approach to their individual needs. I focus on breaking complex topics into manageable steps, using visual aids, real-world examples, analogies, and active recall techniques. I also incorporate practice questions, study strategies, and test-taking techniques to help students become more confident and efficient learners.

What a Typical Lesson Looks Like

Each session begins with a brief review of the student's current coursework and any concepts they find particularly challenging. After identifying areas that need improvement, we work through the material together using explanations and practice exercises tailored to their learning style.

I like to incorporate practice questions throughout the session to assess understanding and identify any remaining gaps. Before finishing, we review the most important takeaways and discuss helpful study tools the student can use independently.

What Sets Me Apart

Throughout my academic journey, I've learned that studying harder doesn't always mean studying more effectively. I've developed a variety of study techniques to tackle challenging science courses, and I enjoy sharing those strategies with others.

I understand that every student processes information differently, and I believe it's important to adapt teaching methods rather than expect every student to learn the same way. My goal is to create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and building confidence in their abilities.

Who My Lessons Are For

I offer tutoring for middle school, high school, and undergraduate students, particularly those seeking support in biology, general science, anatomy, and related subjects. My lessons are also ideal for students who want to strengthen their study habits, improve test-taking strategies, or learn how to approach challenging coursework more effectively.
