About Afeera

I achieved an A in A-Level sociology in 2014, graduated with a 2:1 in Criminology and Sociology from the University of Kent in 2017 and then began my master's degree in Digital Media and Society at Loughborough University, graduating in 2018 with a 2:1. My master's degree is also within the field of sociology, but focussing specifically on the digital world and its impact on society. After graduating, I worked as a Youth Support Worker for the YMCA to work with young people with additional needs for half a year until I landed a job in a secondary school/sixth form as a learning support assistant (LSA). I have worked as an LSA for over a year now, mostly working with sixth form students to provide additional support to those with special educational needs, those struggling with their learning and to support disengaged students. I supported a year 12 and year 13 student who both studied sociology. My role was to scribe for them in their lessons. I spent a whole academic year in both the year 12 and 13 sociology lessons which has refreshed my memory of AQA's A-level sociology syllabus, allowed me to observe how sociology lessons are taught by experienced teachers and taught me an array of skills to support students in private tuition.

I also have experience in tutoring students in sociology, including students who have SEND and social, emotional and mental health problems in person and virtually on Microsoft Teams, especially due to the outbreak of COVID-19. My tuition focusses on essay writing and exam practices, supporting the learning of key content, theorists and key terms through a range of different strategies to suit individual learning needs. I have also adapted and created resources to assist students with learning difficulties in processing information, including the use of visuals, sensory tools and using special coloured paper for students with dyslexia and autism.

In regards to safeguarding and wellbeing, I currently have a valid enhanced child and adult DBS on the update service.

About the lesson

My teaching method is based on the student's learning style and individual needs. It all depending on how confident students are with sociology and how much help they require. Some students may only need help with essay writing techniques, others may need help with learning how to revise - it really depends on the individual's own needs. I like to focus my sessions on developing the student's critical thinking and analyses skills as these are two key skills required to achieve high grades in sociology. I have used powerpoints, worksheets, textbooks, flashcards, mindmaps, educational YouTube videos and past exam papers to facilitate learning. I have also incorporated fun activities to support learning, such as using Kahoot and other activities to help students to remember key terms and theorists.
