About Dennis

I am currently a Stanford M.S student studying Aeronautical/Astronautical Engineering. I have tutored before in High School and was the president of our tutoring club. I have also been tutored before by professionals and have picked up on some of their tools and methods, such as being able discern between lacking the fundamental knowledge versus simply needing more practice.

I graduated with a 4.0 from Georgia Institute of Technology in Aerospace Engineering and a minor in physics. I was also an undergraduate head teaching assistant for Dynamics. Here, I hosted weekly recitations for the class that closely resembles what I would do for 1 on 1 tutoring sessions. Furthermore, I also held weekly office hours for more 1 on 1 engagements with students with any lingering questions for the week.

I truly believe in inspiring students to be their best just like how others did with me. I have had practice doing so in my high school and undergraduate career and would love to continue it. While the STEM field is difficult, I truly believe a "good [scientist] can come from anywhere," - Anton Ego (Ratatouille 2017).

For me, what makes an exceptional tutor is empathy. Being able to understand the student’s perspectives and their struggles is key to helping them succeed. As such, I believe in the Socratic method, where I will keep asking my tutees questions to help them guide themselves to the right answer while also allowing me to understand their thought process without making any assumptions. This is my method of tutoring and my strength to helping my peers. However, a weakness is that my method can be time consuming, especially for students that are simply trying to cram last minute. To alleviate this, I have adjusted my style to fit the urgencies of my students. For example, if my students need a review session for an exam the next day, I will opt for a more “drill-type” session.

Typically, my lessons are mainly meant for highschool to undergraduate level physics, math, and engineering subjects that are commonly taught to engineering students. For math, I can tutor in precalculus, calculus 1, 2, and 3, linear algebra, and differential equations.
For physics, I can tutor in physics 1: algebra based physics, both Physics C, and their corresponding counterparts in undergraduate introductory physics.
For Engineering, I can tutor in Dynamics, mechanics of materials, statics, thermodynamics, and fluids.
I am open to any other subjects as well if the students requests, but would like to discuss about it before hand.

To give an example of a typical lesson, I would always strive to match the pacing of what the students want. I would try to teach my tutees the main important concepts and intuition behind their current class topic because I truly believe that understanding the fundamentals is what makes a great scientist. After, I would answer any of the students question and try to help them with their homework, problem sets, or even midterm reviews. Finally, I would try to ask thought experiment questions to help cement the intuition into their head and we would discuss what they would think. Drills and exercise problems would be assigned after as homework.
