About Leonard
How does the physicality and materiality of sculpture, which inherently involves bodily relations, even in the most abstract forms, influence your perception and interpretation of art? This question lies at the heart of my creative practice, where I explore the intricate interplay between form and material. I am Leonard, a Chinese-born visual artist, researcher, and educator based in Glasgow, UK. My work spans drawing, sculpture, and installation art, focusing on East Asian art, Orientalism, and the concept of the erased body within pre-empirical knowledge. I aim to interpret and translate these complex themes through a diverse array of materials, creating works that articulate a symbiotic relationship between form, materiality, and cultural identity. This ongoing exploration of artistic expression serves as a testament to the complexities of human existence, reflecting my passion for uncovering the layers of meaning embedded in our interactions with art. My teaching journey was prompted by a desire to share this passion and foster a deeper understanding of art's transformative power. Witnessing the profound impact of personalised guidance and tailored instruction on a student's artistic development inspired me to offer private tutorials. My goal is to help students unlock their creativity, master their craft, and find their voice in art. By sharing my expertise and commitment, I strive to provide a valuable and transformative experience for each student, nurturing their artistic journey with honesty and dedication.

My passion for sculpture and drawing drives personalised tutorials that nurture creativity and confidence. From the fluid curves of a clay sculpture to the intricate details of a graphite sketch, every medium offers a unique avenue for expression. This deep love for art fuels my teaching approach, allowing me to provide private tutorials that are not only instructional but also profoundly transformative. With tailored instruction, continuous feedback, and a supportive environment, students achieve breakthroughs, mastering techniques and developing unique styles for a transformative artistic journey. My teaching methodology is rooted in fostering a supportive and collaborative learning environment. I encourage open communication, where students feel comfortable sharing their ideas, challenges, and aspirations. Each session is structured to balance technical instruction with creative exploration, ensuring that students build a solid foundation and are free to experiment and grow. A typical lesson with me begins with a discussion about the student's recent work, progress, and any challenges they've encountered. This helps me tailor the session to their current needs and goals. We then move into a demonstration of techniques relevant to the day's focus—whether it's mastering the use of shadows in drawing or understanding the properties of different sculpting materials. Students are given hands-on practice time, during which I provide continuous feedback and encouragement. We conclude with a review of their work, highlighting improvements and setting goals for the next session. Students in my tutorials can expect a comprehensive learning experience that covers: Fundamental principles of sculpture and drawing, including form, proportion, and perspective. Advanced techniques for creating depth, texture, and movement. Personalised exercises designed to address specific areas of improvement. Insight into the creative process, from initial concept to finished piece. Guidance on developing a unique artistic style and voice.
