About Sawyer
I am a graduate student at the University of Toronto completing a Master of Information with a dual specialization in centered data science and critical information policy studies. I completed my undergrad at Western University graduating with a BA Honors Specialization in Media, Information and Technoculture. By and large, my academic background lies at the intersection of cultural studies, the political economy of media, and technoculture. I have worked in a variety of industries such as media planning, graphic design, fashion, user experience, and communications. . In addition, I am proficient in many applications that optimize the communication and visualization of information such as InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, iMovie, PowerPoint, Excel, HTML5 and CSS. I have volunteered as a peer note taker, academic commissioner, and LAMP (leadership academic mentorship program) co-chair at Western university. This past semester (Winter 2021) I was fortunate to have been a research assistant at Western working on a project surrounding the implications of artificial intelligence within mental health diagnosis and treatment.

As a tutor my teaching methods ideally fluctuate to fit the needs of the student (i.e. visual learners will be provided with powerpoint slides vs. auditory learners will be spoken a lesson via ZOOM). I do try to instill organizational skills in all my sessions (for example creating organized folders on computers that separate assignments, course content, practice questions etc.). These skills will prepare students for higher level education irrespective of their learning style and program of interest. I value creativity, open/two-way communication and feedback. I hope to provide a separate learning environment that compliments a traditional elementary or secondary school setting and ultimately provide mentees/ students with the support and knowledge they need to meet their academic goals.
