About Karl

Being largely self taught throughout my youth, I started playing piano from the age of 3, picking up tunes by ear and taking my first lessons aged 6. A graduate of Trinity College of Music in London, my former professors include, Douglas Finch, Yonti Soloman, Penelope Roskell, Margaret Bolt and Judith Morgan.

In addition to teaching I have worked extensively alongside singers, choirs, and other instrumentalists, accompanying for exams and arranging scores. I am also working towards my first piano album which comprises of my own compositions with my style being influenced by more minimalist composers such as Einaudi, Yiruma and Yan Tiersen.

I regularly enjoy taking part in music festivals and competitions. Recent local highlights include winner of the Challenge Cup in the 2017 Godalming Music Festival, the 2015 Farnham Piano Competition (receiving the Peckham memorial award and cash prize) and winner of the Aldershot and Farnborough Piano Festival 2008.

Having been teaching for 10 years now, I have gained much experience in providing tuition to a range of age groups. During that time, I have grown even more dedicated in helping others learn. For me, passing on my skills that I have developed over the last 25 years is one of the most rewarding aspects of teaching.

One of my students was recently awarded the most promising junior award 2nd year in a row from ABRSM adjudicator and pianist, Anthony Williams in the Aldershot and Farnborough Music Festival. I also have 100% pass rate on all ABRSM graded examinations.

About the lesson

I have a very welcoming, friendly and professional approach to every pupil I teach. I tailor each lesson to the needs of the pupil and focus directly on specific issues that need to be addressed in a fun and engaging way, so he or she can come away with the feeling of satisfaction and achievement. I fully support all my pupils and encourage them to have a personal input into every lesson.

To provide my students with a firm backbone of good musical training, I always set out to ensure that the basic skills are in place first and that the theory and aural side is touched upon and put into practise, making sure no bad habits work their way in to help create an all rounded musician who can come away relying on their own skills.

A while back I created a Facebook social group just for my students in order to help bring everyone together into share ideas and confidence. Myself and my students post regularly with positive encouragement and media feeds. I also create spotify playlists that my students follow which provides them with an insight into new styles of music.

Details

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, I am currently only offering lessons online. However once the situation improves and we are out of lockdown I am able to accomodate students at my home. I am also happy to travel to the home of the pupil as long as they are within 5 miles or 15 minutes distance (whichever comes first).

I do politely request that all my students agree to a 24 hour cancellation policy, with the exception of unforseen cirmustances such as illness.
