About Ingrid
With a design background and years of hands-on studio practice, I bring both technical precision and genuine artistic insight to every lesson. As a professional surface pattern designer, I specialize in florals, botanicals, and herbal subjects, and my personal painting practice spans chinoiserie and impressionism.
I take a patient, structured approach to teaching and have experience working with children as well as adults. Every lesson is tailored to the individual student's goals, whether that means building strong fundamentals, refining technique, or exploring a specific style such as chinoiserie or botanical painting. My aim is to create a supportive learning environment where students feel confident developing their skills at their own pace.

My Approach as a Tutor
Teaching method and techniques
I teach through demonstration first, then guided practice. I'll show a technique, whether it's color mixing, building up layers, or working from a limewash, and then walk you through doing it yourself, correcting as we go rather than after the fact. I break skills down into small, manageable steps so nothing feels overwhelming, and I adjust my explanations based on how each student learns best, some people need to see it, others need to hear the reasoning behind it.
I also lean on my design background here. I don't just teach "how to paint," I teach how to see, how to think about composition, value, and color relationships before the brush even touches the canvas. That foundation makes technique easier to absorb because it's not just muscle memory, it's understanding why something works.
A typical lesson plan
A typical session runs in four parts:
Check-in and goal setting (5–10 minutes): We look at where you left off last time and decide what we're focusing on today.
Demonstration (10–15 minutes): I show the technique or concept for the day, explaining the reasoning as I go.
Guided practice (30–40 minutes): You work on your own piece while I give real-time feedback, adjusting your approach as needed.
Wrap-up and homework (5–10 minutes): We review progress, and I give you something small to practice before our next session if you want it.
Lessons flex around what the student needs. A beginner working on fundamentals will spend more time on demonstration and technique; a more advanced student might spend most of the session in guided practice with lighter check-ins.
What sets me apart
Most tutors come from one lane, either purely academic art training or purely self-taught practice. I bridge both. My design degree gives me a structured, technical understanding of composition and color theory, while my 14 years of hands-on oil painting experience means I've actually made the mistakes and worked through them myself. I'm not teaching from a textbook, I'm teaching from experience, which means I can anticipate where students tend to get stuck before it happens.
I'm also genuinely patient, especially with beginners and younger students. I don't rush technique or make anyone feel behind. Painting should feel like discovery, not pressure.
Who these lessons are for
These lessons work well for:
Complete beginners who've never picked up a brush and want a clear, non-intimidating entry point
Intermediate painters looking to refine specific skills like color mixing, layering, or composition
Kids and teens interested in learning painting fundamentals in a patient, encouraging environment
Adults returning to art after time away, or picking it up for the first time as a creative outlet
Students interested specifically in oils or gouache, whether for realistic still life, florals, or general skill-building
No prior experience or formal art background is required. I tailor each lesson to the student's current level and goals, whether that's building a portfolio, developing a hobby, or just learning to enjoy the process.
