About Caylen

Hi, my name is Caylen Crawford. I'm a music composer, producer, guitarist and bassist with 15+ years of experience working with music industry professionals from around the world. I'm also passionate about teaching music. I am currently based in Hamilton, New Zealand. Growing up in New York in a musical family, I developed an appreciation for music at a young age. My brother is a violinist, percussionist and music therapist. My mother worked as a classical piano instructor for over 40 years and my father is the founder/Director of the American Classical Orchestra. I began studying piano at age 7, and then added 7 years of classical cello study. I started playing guitar at age 13. I played in reggae, funk and rock bands for years before developing an interest in jazz. I attended classes at the Berklee College of Music and have 2 degrees from the Los Angeles College of Music (LACM) where I was a student of Jody Fisher and Tariqh Akoni. I moved to NZ in 2016 where I've been working as a music tutor and music producer. I was a bassist for the Hamilton-based metal band Haast Hunter and have collaborated with many NZ artists, including members of L.A.B. and Katchafire. I currently teach guitar, bass and piano, perform in multiple ensembles, create educational content for YouTube's Lucra Jam Tracks, create promotional content for the Tomplay music app, and write for Doug Stebleton's music catalog in Los Angeles which provides music for film and TV studies.

About the lesson

With 15 years of tutoring experience, I specialize in providing guitar and bass lessons for students of all ages, from beginner to advanced. Lessons can be in-person or online, and are typically 30 or 60 minutes. My teaching methods vary from student to student because each has a unique learning style. In general, my aim as a music teacher/tutor is to help students learn their instrument quickly and efficiently in ways that are both fun and creative. Lessons include helpful exercises for practicing, learning songs, improvisation, music theory, ear training, and much more. My students also have free access to backing tracks, chord charts and other useful materials relevant to the lessons.
