About Jonathan

I believe that being in the moment, or being present, is the best preparation for learning, and I find that a life-long education with or without school has kept me engaged in productive learning situations no matter the type of work. This is also why I am committed to understanding my student's learning style, so I can motivate each person toward his/her goals. When I recall my motivation, I am teaching myself to remain persistent for my goals. This is the model for my students. Throughout my years as a writing consultant, I've learned to acknowledge the social-emotional motivation for students and relate it to the work we do with language. Reading and writing are the cores of apprehending and applying knowledge, as well as learning about one's true self. For this reason, my lessons reflect the hard work it takes to uplift my student's perspective to meaningful discussions about the important of language and using it well.

About the lesson

I usually begin with several exercises to assess what elements of writing need improvement. As I add new situations and styles of learning for my students, I scaffold my exercises into new situations to test both recall and application. Each lesson dovetails into the next, but lessons do not necessarily have a linear path toward depth of knowledge. A taxonomy of cognition helps me assess where to apply appropriate learning situations that compliment the student's learning style.
