I use many different techniques depending on the area of focus for reading, whether it is comprehension, decoding, or letters and sounds for beginning readers. Lesson Plan: Decoding CVC Words with Sight Words Grade Level: K–1 Duration: 30 minutes Focus: Phonics (CVC decoding), Sight Word Recognition Objective: Students will be able to: Decode and read simple CVC words (e.g., cat, dog, pin). Recognize and read 2–3 new sight words (e.g., the, is, see). Materials Needed: Whiteboard or chart paper Letter tiles or magnetic letters Word cards (CVC and sight words) Mini whiteboards or worksheets Simple decodable readers or sentences Pointer or highlighting tape (optional) Lesson Sequence: 1. Warm-Up (5 minutes) Sight Word Review: Flashcards of known sight words (the, a, and, I). Have students say them aloud. Phonemic Awareness: Oral blending and segmenting (e.g., "What word do you hear when I say /c/ /a/ /t/?") 2. Introduce New Sight Words (5 minutes) Introduce 2 new sight words (e.g., is and see). Use them in oral sentences: "The cat is big." "I see a dog." Practice "sky writing" and tracing the words. 3. CVC Word Work (10 minutes) Build CVC words with magnetic letters (e.g., m-a-t, p-i-n, s-u-n). Model blending each sound: “/m/ /a/ /t/ — mat.” Have students make and read words with teacher support. Activity options: Elkonin boxes for sound mapping Whiteboard practice with dictated CVC words “Read and match” CVC words to pictures. 4. Guided Reading / Sentence Practice (5–7 minutes) Read 2–3 simple sentences using new sight words and CVC words: "The sun is hot." "I see a cat." Students track print with their fingers as they read. 5. Wrap-Up / Assessment (3–5 minutes) Quick check: Show CVC word cards and ask students to read aloud. Exit ticket: Identify or write one sight word and one CVC word. Extension Activities (Optional): Play a CVC word game (e.g., memory match or bingo). Use a decodable book during small group time. The thing that sets me apart from most reading tutors is the years of experience, the number of different programs that I have worked, and also having my Remedial Reading and Language Arts Specialist degree, where I have learned many strategies to help students with reading, writing, and comprehension Lessons could be based on individual student needs that are in K-5
