About Mushfiq

I have taught at Mathnasium, C2 Education (currently teaching), and BookNook. I also tutored at a Middle School on behalf of Study Smart Tutors. To me when it comes to intervention purposes it boils down to a mixture of both the approaches; at least that’s the way I would tackle it. For instance, in a previous tutoring position at Arundel Middle School (Glen Burnie, Maryland, USA) I used to listen to the students’ problem (areas in which they were struggling or experiencing difficulties) and guide them accordingly. I used to provide explicit instructions providing teacher demonstration and guided practice before asking the students to independently solve the problem. Once they were done, I would test their concept by having them do two or three similar problems. I never stopped there. With their confidence growing I would then present them with slightly more complicated problems that are based on the same underlying concept but required much more in-depth thinking on the part of the students. It is at this stage that the inquiry approach comes into play. The students would question the problem from different angles and conduct thought experiments to best solve the problems. Sometimes some would get stuck and then I would proceed on providing them with more explicit instructions.

About the lesson

When teaching Math to higher year level (grade: 9-12) students I always make sure they understand the underlying concept thoroughly; because, without a solid and firm understanding they would go nowhere. As long as the theory and concept are clear in their mind they can answer or solve any problem flung at them from no matter which angle. I also try to encourage at-home ‘Analytical reading’ once I am done with a particular topic. Analytical reading is needed when one wants to fully grasp and appreciate what he is reading. My teaching methods are tailored to foster independent thinking so that the students when encountering a new theory or a concept always question it from every angle, look at it from every perspective, making connections and thereby gain an insight that is further checked for congruence with whatever they know already.
