About Molly

Hey there, everyone, my name is Molly! I am 25 years old, a Navy Veteran, a military wife, and a pre-nursing student at PSC! I grew up in the small town of Sandy, OR, with my parents and my little brother, Nathan. I am currently living in Pace, Florida, and loving it!

For the past 20 years, my mother has been a 3rd-grade teacher, and as a child I spent many weekends and summers in her classroom helping her with lesson prep and classroom organization. For as long as I can remember, I have loved the idea of teaching people about the things I was passionate about, and thrived on the satisfaction of knowing that I helped them learn. In fact, as a child, I would write my own lesson plans, invite my friends to my mom's classroom after school, and force them to sit through my pretend class! While in high school, I worked at a kids' play place and as a camp counselor at a living history museum, further reinforcing my desire to work with kids and be a positive influence in their lives.

Ironically, I have chosen Nursing for my ultimate career. While it may seem far off from teaching, I have found core similarities in helping people, making a difference in their lives, and having that high degree of job satisfaction. But as I work toward that degree, I am very excited to share my knowledge with students who need support in creating that strong academic foundation.

As a child, math was a very difficult subject for me; I was missing some of those essential building blocks. Through dedicated teachers, tutors, and lots of hard work, I was able to fill in those blanks. I'm so thankful I found people who were able to explain math in a way that FINALLY makes sense! Math went from being the class I dreaded most to the one I feel most confident in.

Through this experience, I have learned the true importance of connecting with your teacher and the match between a professor's teaching style and the students' learning style. I always assumed I was just bad at math; I never stopped to think that maybe I just wasn't being taught in a way that connected with my brain.

I would love to help your student build their comprehension and appreciation for math, so they can have their own "this finally makes sense" moment!

Please go to the Details tab under "Rates" to learn more about my teaching philosophy and the impact I can have in helping students with ADHD!

A typical lesson will include:

1. Warm Up: We begin a session with a quick review of what we discussed previously, followed by a discussion about goals for the session and whether they have any assignments coming due or tests to prepare for. I also like to discuss how they are feeling about the material, my teaching methods, and what changes we need to make this session to improve comprehension.

2. Game Plan: Once we know what needs to be accomplished, we will create a "game plan" together. This ensures all goals and assignments are completed while giving the student some control over their own learning.

3. Time to learn: Together we work through school-assigned material as well as developing their understanding of the concepts. When discussing a new concept, I give the students a couple of "starter" problems to work through on their own. This is not a results-based exercise; it simply tells me how well the student already understands the concept and helps me isolate what we need to work on!
If the goal of the session is comprehension or review, we will use the session to create or reinforce those conceptual building blocks through repetition and Q&A. Through my own learning, I've found the trial-and-error method very effective, allowing students to follow their intuition and attempt problems several different ways. I've found actual comprehension comes from understanding WHY things work, not from being told that they will. The beginning stages of that comprehension involve forming connections between similar concepts. I want to reinforce building those connections by allowing students to try the problem in a way that makes sense to them, then we discuss what works and what doesn't.
If the goal is completing homework, I like to bunch problems into groups of 3. The student independently completes 3 problems to the best of their abilities. We then review those problems. What made sense and what didn't? Did you get the answer correct? What do we need to change to get the correct answer? This allows the student to use their own brain power to work through the questions without relying on me for rescue. It also ensures that we are correcting mistakes at the start before repetition commits the incorrect method to memory.

4. Wrap-Up: At the end of the session, I provide *optional resources* for them to use between sessions to continue working on that skill. It is entirely up to the student and their parents if they wish to use those resources. I am here to help, not to add extra work and stress.

I tutor all ages from K-12, basic arithmetic to Algebra. All sessions are student-driven, meaning we go at their pace and shift focus to the areas they struggle with the most. With a student-driven model, I also put a lot of emphasis on teaching time management skills so we can find a healthy balance between focusing on learning the material and still making deadlines. I believe wholeheartedly in creating well-rounded students who feel confident in their skills.

Free Meet and Greet Session:
The first meeting is a 30-minute consultation and is free to ensure we are a good fit! I would love to meet in person or virtually to discuss our session goals, learn more about my tutoring style, and coordinate availability.

Grades K-8: Meet and Greet must have a parent present, though the student is more than welcome; I'd love to meet them! For this age, I would love the parent to lead the "what we are looking for" part of the conversation. This ensures all academic, school-mandated goals are met!
Grades 9-12: Meet and Greet must have a parent present, though the student being part of the meeting is highly preferred! I encourage the student to lead this session and tell me what they feel they need help with.

*This is not the "free first session" as advertised. If we are a good fit, we can book our first session, 45 minutes, and that will be at no cost to you!*

Supplies:
Online: Access to a computer with a webcam (needs to have a microphone)
Both Online and In-Person: Notebook, pen, highlighters, and calculator.

Teaching Philosophy:
As a 25-year-old Navy veteran, military wife, and pre-nursing student, I understand that life isn't a linear journey, and sometimes we need a little extra help! I approach lessons with patience, flexibility, and zero judgment. As someone who excels in math as an adult but struggled with it as a child, I know that a good teacher can make or break your students' understanding of math - and their confidence in their own abilities. I believe it is essential to build a strong rapport between the student and tutor where the student is comfortable sharing their academic struggles, even if those struggles involve concepts taught in previous years.

I fully believe that Math is a "building blocks" subject. If the students are missing a block, then they are missing essential skills that are needed later. Part of creating a true judgment-free environment includes having an honest and understanding discussion about what skills they may be missing so we can develop them. You may be surprised by how quickly comprehension improves when you fill in those blanks!

I also work well with students who may have ADHD or ADHD tendencies. Learning is not one-size-fits-all, and support must be provided for those who may struggle in the classroom environment. I have developed many techniques in my own life, both academically and professionally, that would directly aid someone who may struggle to focus or need certain conditions to learn. Did you know that your child excelling in English but struggling in math is not necessarily a reflection of how hard they work? When a child has ADHD, the brain can hyperfocus on things that match their cognitive style and peak their interests, and then completely zone out when they don't understand something, think it is boring, or have begun to think of themselves as "bad" at it. My goal is to help change the way they view math, rebuild their motivation, and improve their confidence!

Quick Disclaimer:
1. I strongly believe in active, not passive, learning. The end goal is not simply to help your child complete assignments, but to develop genuine understanding. Students will complete 100% of the school-assigned work; I am there to provide support, ensure accuracy and understanding, and fill in the conceptual gaps!
