About Thomas
I have taught high school and college level courses for over 30 years and have established a reputation as supportive and enthusiastic teacher who always aims to bring out the best in his students--not merely as writers and readers, but also in terms of their self-confidence and perseverance.
My relationships with students are positive, supportive, and always professional. I pride myself on listening carefully to the voices of students, especially in moments when they feel they are struggling or lacking confidence in their own abilities.
I am flexible, adaptable, respectful, and always thinking creatively about various ways to explain concepts and materials to meet the diverse needs of individual students.
My effectiveness as a teacher has also been demonstrated through achievement scores my students typically earn on ACT, SAT, and AP exams.
In addition to helping students earn the scores they desire on those exams or achieve the grades they desire in college level courses, I also care a great deal about what their grades, test scores, and evaluations suggest about their ability to meet the academic challenges that await them in the future.

My techniques focus on the fundamentals of academic reading, critical thinking, and writing.
I prefer focusing on assignments and skills that will help high school students make successful transitions into college level courses. I am also interested in assisting students already enrolled in college literature, rhetoric, and composition courses but who are struggling to meet the demands of those courses.
My approach is student centered in the sense that I desire to assist students in reading texts they are assigned in AP, IB and other college level courses. My aim would not be to burden students with additional texts to read or written work to complete (unless, of course, they desired such), but rather to maintain a focus on the assignments they are given in current courses.
I am particularly attentive to each student's writing habits and tendencies, attempting to build on their existing skills while encouraging them to adopt new knowledge and approaches to their writing.
