About Desiree

Hello! My name is Desiree D. I am a teacher, artist, and writer with an advanced degree in History as well as an undergraduate degree in the same, both degrees focused on the elements of academic and/or argumentative writing and debate. I am a current AP English and AP History high school instructor who has been teaching ELA and Social Studies in the classroom at a middle and high school level since 2016. Before I began teaching in the classroom, I worked as a writing tutor in diverse environments for students as young as first grade all the way through college and even worked with some adults continuing their educations or seeking help with writing projects. While an undergraduate, I also spent two summers as a remedial reading specialist for at-risk students in the K-12 range. I am very experienced and able to help with reading comprehension, rhetorical and literary analysis, remedial reading, and test preparation for all AP English and AP History exams, and the language arts sections of the ISEE, the SAT, and the ACT. AP and SAT prep make up the majority of my lessons. Beyond test prep, my most popular specialty is Essay Help. I have spent years teaching the writing process to virtually every type of student. I can help with many things: individual essay help, editing and proofreading, formal style guide training (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.), argumentative tactics, rhetorical devices, and I can teach my special step by step approach to anyone, a practice that will carry students through their academic careers and the rest of their lives. About the lesson

I approach education by helping students to engage with the academic writing process through a fresh, engaging, and holistic approach. I teach and help employ a unique step-by-step approach to essays that incorporates creative thinking, pre-writing organization, and thesis development and support, all while discovering and encouraging each student's strengths.

I hired Desiree to help my son with AP US History and in just a few sessions & essay reviews, 1) his grade in the course at school has improved dramatically with heaps of praise from his teacher over his improved writing and analysis skills and 2) his practice test scores for multiple choice are also up DRAMATICALLY. He was generally scoring around 23 or 25 out of 55 and now he is getting 40-45 out of 55 correct on every practice exam, getting better every time. Desiree knows her stuff. She is so well informed and she takes the time to teach the info to her student in away that will make sense to him as his individual self. My son feels comfortable with her and he feels like he can ask questions and he has fun learning from her. He looks forward to the sessions because he likes talking to her and always learns from her. He hated history and now he is interested and even likes the class at school. He enjoys the success he is experiencing. My son and I Could not recommend this tutor more enthusiastically. She is a talented educator and someone we will be keeping around for a long time. What a find!
