About James

My name is James I began skateboarding at eleven years old, I want to teach more people skateboarding not only because I enjoy it the most out of other activities but because I want to encourage other people that it's good to find hidden confidence within yourself and to spread the benefits the sport has to bring. I have taught all different types of people with different age ranges, various skill levels. I have invested my time to extra training and safeguarding courses to ensure the safety of my clients in a professional manner. When providing lessons I know how to take certain procedures prior to planning lessons to minimise risk of injury as this is an extreme sport which involves levels of danger by learning from training with accredited organisations.

Techniques of delivering lessons include physical demonstration, shadowing, mirroring techniques. Practising tricks on softer ground surfaces like grass to build confidence. Practising tricks on the skate deck without the wheels attached to really get a feel of the motion of the trick without it being scary. Using visual stimuli, for example, using mini cones for navigation techniques and fun game activities to engage younger ages. Average lessons are one hour. Skateboard GB accredited qualification. NSPCC safeguarding for children certificate. I have experience of teaching to ages of 4 to 35 years old. My lessons are for all skill levels ranging from someone who has never skateboarded before to beginners who want to improve technique to advanced skill level.

  • What age did you start playing sport? Tell us about this time or moment in your life.

The age I began skateboarding was when I was 11 years old my parents bought me a skateboard for my 11th birthday, that summer of my last year of primary school I really took advantage of the summer holiday to practice skateboarding.
  • What are your favourite sports; those that you practice at a high level, a simple hobby, and a sport that you'd still like to discover?

My favourite sports are pool, snooker and swimming. I am a member of a pool/snooker hall where I play at a high level, a simple hobby of mine is discovering new beaches to swim and a sport I'd love to discover is snowboarding !
  • What gives you the motivation and passion to pursue your sport?

Some of motivation and passion comes from watching classic skateboarding videos as well as new released skateboarding videos.

Seeing progression amongst my friends that are still developing more advance techniques gives me the passion to pursue further in skating.

Last but not least seeing my own students progress so quickly and putting a smile on their face from learning also motivates me to pursue skateboarding
  • Do you have a sporting achievement that you're particularly proud of?

Winning a prize at a "best trick" competition at a skatepark made me really proud and made me realise that I am talented.
  • How have your achievements and challenges made you a better sportsperson?

The achievements I made have definitely made me a humble person and also made me appreciate this sport even more.

Challenges that I faced such as injuries made me realise when I had to recover and take time out made me realise the importance of the relationship that I have with this sport.

The fact I was so eager to carry on skateboarding after my first major injury made me a better sportsperson because I came back even harder to make up for lost time I could have been practicing.
  • If you had to go for a jog with a famous athlete, who would you choose? And what questions would you ask them?

If I was to go on a jog with a famous athlete it would definitely be pro skater Rodney Mullen as he was a pioneer in freestyle skateboarding.

I would be intrigued to find why he decided to have such a different outlook on what tricks you can do on a skateboard.

I would also definitely ask him how it felt to invent tricks that will change the history of skateboarding
  • How do you help people stay motivated?

I help people stay motivated by finding out their goals within the sport reminding them off this, sometimes simply sharing with them some of my favourite tricks and this may help them to broaden their horizons.
  • What makes you a Superprof in sports?

What makes me a Superprof in sports is I have a good knowledge of safety techniques along with the right combination to still include the elements of fun to keep the sport thriving and alive.
