About Holly

I am currently studying Interior Architecture at Falmouth University. My academic background stems from a range of subjects including Business & Economics, Geography and Art, achieving Bs in A-levels. Maths is the main subject I have tutored for children sitting SATS. I have also helped children to build their literacy skills and supported them with any homework due. I particularly enjoy offering Art & Design based session as this is a huge passion of mine and I believe every student should express their creativity as well as being acedemically focused.

About the lesson

Hiya, my name is Holly and I offer maths lessons to students in year 5 to 7.
My lessons structure:
1. Friendly - An important aspect of my teaching is to offer a casual, friendly service that helps students to feel comfortable. I also enjoy understanding their likes and dislikes as this can determine future teaching strategies.
2. Planning - I liked to be organised and understand what topics we should cover during our sessions so I often set mini tests and activities.
3. Confidence - Once the topics has been chosen for the session, I liked to start with some easy games and activities to help the student to build confidence.
4. Learn - Next I teach the topic and get the student to follow along with a textbook or resource. Sometimes I use videos or I use objects to demonstrate the topics for visual learners.
5. Practice - We then work through a set of questions and activities to put the students knowledge into practice. We go through any wrong answers and try to understand their mistakes in order to learn from them.
6. Remember - Through constant practice we can dictate common errors, at this stage I like to help the student to create some flashcards or a poster etc. that can help them remember the methods they have learnt. This is a fun way to recall their memory in the future and prevent them from repeating habits.
7. Challenge - It is important for the student to learn to answer questions that are styled like their SATS papers. This challenges the student to use a range of skills and build on what they have learnt.
8. Reflect - By carrying out this method of teaching, I found students I have previously taught understood the topic much more and were able to remember what we had covered in that session, instead of just forgetting what they had learnt. At the end of the session I like to get the student to continue with the activity/games they were working on at the start. Now they are able to complete questions/tasks that they were unable to do at the start.
