About Peter
I’m a passionate, experienced educator with a background in teaching English, writing, literature, drama, and theater arts at both the high school and college levels. Raised in New York and now based in the Washington, DC area, I bring an Ivy League education, deep subject knowledge, and a supportive, engaging teaching style to every session. In addition to my classroom experience, I’ve spent years working professionally in theater—as a writer, director, and actor—and in public relations and marketing, helping to shape compelling stories and impactful messages. These real-world experiences inform my teaching and allow me to connect academic concepts to creative and practical applications. I strive to create a welcoming and personalized environment where students of all levels can build confidence, sharpen their skills, and develop a strong voice in their writing and communication. When I’m not teaching, you’ll find me reading, writing creatively, tackling crosswords, watching movies, cheering on my favorite teams, sipping coffee, and enjoying life with my pets and family. As a tutor, my approach is student-centered, supportive, and focused on building strong foundations in writing, reading comprehension, and critical thinking. I tailor each lesson to meet the individual needs and learning style of the student—whether they’re in 7th grade or navigating college-level coursework. My goal is not just to help students improve their grades, but to give them the tools and confidence to express themselves clearly and effectively in any academic or real-world setting.
A typical lesson begins with a brief review of previous work or assignments, followed by a focused skill-building session—this could involve close reading and analysis of a text, grammar exercises, or brainstorming and outlining for an essay. I always incorporate guided practice, real-time feedback, and discussion to encourage active learning. If a student is working on a specific assignment, we’ll break it down together and walk through the writing process step-by-step, from idea to polished final draft.
What sets me apart is my background and experience: I’m an Ivy League graduate (Secondary Education, English) with years of professional experience in writing, editing, and teaching. I bring both academic rigor and a down-to-earth, encouraging teaching style. I’ve worked with students across a wide range of skill levels and know how to adjust my approach to meet them where they are—and help them get where they need to go.
