About Jess

Philadelphia-bred and New Orleans-based, Jess Araten has a passion for music and education. Jess fell in love with performance at age ten, and has continued to hone her craft since. She has studied with seasoned musicians across the country, and has played alongside members of classic acts such as Guns N’ Roses, Aerosmith, and Earth, Wind & Fire. As a high-schooler, Jess was featured in Guitar Player Magazine as an up-and-coming guitarist, toured as a School of Rock National All-Star, and was featured during Grammy Week as part of Grammy Camp’s alumni band. Jess spent much of her late teens and early twenties in Philadelphia-based bands and projects, and has integrated herself into the New Orleans music scene since her move here in October ’21. In college, Jess double-majored in English and Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies, remaining in Philadelphia to fuse her passion for music and academics. She now works as a full-time musician and music educator, releasing music under the name ‘Yska.’ In 2021, she released her collaborative with experimental album 'A Need/A Want' on label Notice Recordings to critical acclaim. With roots in rock, funk, and blues, Jess has quickly fallen in love with New Orleans, playing shows along Frenchmen and gaining an unparalleled music education through playing with established NOLA musicians. She loves to share her excitement with students, and to watch young musicians grow, find their unique voice, and fall in love with their craft. As a former teacher at School of Rock Philadelphia and School of Rock New Orleans and current private and after-school music instructor, Jess again finds herself amazed and revitalized by the talent and drive of her students.

About the lesson

As an educator, Jess tailors lessons to her students individual passions, goals, and needs. She has worked with all ages and skill levels across genres, and loves to find what drives her students to learn an improve. Jess offers students time to both learn songs and work on theory and improvisation. She counts herself lucky to be part of her students' artistic journeys and discovery of their own mode of self-expression as musicians.
